Methods in the Diagnostic Microbiology (2022/2023)
The teaching is organized as follows:
Learning objectives
The educational objectives of the course are to provide the student with different diagnostic techniques in the clinical, food and veterinary fields to be applied in different diagnostic paths. The study and application of these pathways will be supported and justified by the clinical part of human infections, both inter-human and carried by food and animals. The main anthropozoonoses and the main human infections will therefore be treated with reference to the general characteristics of the microbial species involved, the virulence factors and the epidemiology. At the end of the training course, the student will be able to use diagnostic techniques appropriately and consciously. MODULO ANTROPOZOONOSI E IGIENE DEGLI ALIMENTI DI ORIGINE ANIMALE This course aims to give an overview about anthropozoonoses, as important diseases potentially transmissible from animals to humans, as well as their role within public and animal health. In particular, the most relevant animal infectious diseases (viral, bacterial, parasitic, fungal) and foodborne diseases are discussed. At the end of this course, the student will be able to know the major etiologic agents that cause antropoozonoses, their consequences, the biological cycle, the source of infection, the pathology, and the laboratory techniques aimed to diagnose them. MODULO METODI E TECNICHE DI MICROBIOLOGIA CLINICA The objectives of the course are to enable the acquisition of knowledge and understanding about the principles and practice of the main methods for the laboratory diagnosis of infections due to bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses of medical interest. MODULO METODI E TECNICHE DI MICROBIOLOGIA DEGLI ALIMENTI Learning outcomes: To provide a detailed picture of the microorganisms associated with food, with particular attention to altering and pathogenic species. Establish food quality and safety indicators. Research techniques of microorganisms and / or their metabolites ranging from traditional to molecular methods. MODULO MICROBIOLOGIA CLINICA The course aims is to give students the ability to use the laboratory techniques in certain diagnostic pathways supported by the clinical microbiology of the infections. The general characteristics, the virulence factors of microbial species, combined with epidemiology of infections will enable students to use diagnostic techniques in appropriate and conscious way.
Prerequisites and basic notions
General microbiology.
Bibliography
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The student takes an oral exam in each course. The composition of the final mark is the average of the marks obtained in the individual courses.
