Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning objectives
The course aims to provide an approach to the history of Latin language in its evolution’s stages.
Lessons will provide a theoretical frame for the linguistic analysis of chosen samples of Latin texts and for their cultural, historical and literary classification.
Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of the Latin Language.
Expected learning outcomes: at the end of the course students will be able: - to own advanced knowledge of Latin language (phonetics, morphology, syntax); - to analyse Latin texts with reference to the historical development of the Latin language; - to know the basic features of Latin language in archaic, classical and late period; - to know the most important aspects of vulgar and late Latin, even with reference to the development towards Roman languages; - to enhance autonomous ability to understand, translate and explain the proposed Latin texts, with specific reference to their linguistic aspects; - improve the communicative skills directed to identify the different linguistic, narrative and poetic codes related to Latin literary texts; - develop autonomous ability to recognize the linguistic varieties and their use in specific literary genres.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Basic knowledge of the Latin language.
Program
The course is dedicated to the history of the Latin language in its various phases, from the Archaic period to late Latin, focusing on some moments and characteristics of its historical evolution. The course includes a general part, carried out with a series of introductory lessons dedicated to providing the main chronological coordinates of the history of Latin, with attention to the different linguistic forms. The second part of the course deals with a special linguistic typology, the Latin poetic language, Properzio, through the commented reading of the 1st book of Elegies.

Didactic methods
Lectures, which are accompanied, where possible, by seminar-type activities, functional to the active involvement and development of the students' critical autonomy, aimed at opening spaces for discussion, comparison and ongoing experimentation of the methodologies acquired.
Students in isolation for Covid-19 are invited to agree with the teacher how to recover the lessons in which they were temporarily unable to attend.
Learning assessment procedures
Oral assessment, directed to verify:
- ability to distinguish the basic features of archaic, classic and late Latin
- knowledge of the most important features of Propertius' language and style
- ability to understand, translate and interpret Propertius' text
Evaluation criteria
The evaluation of the exam will be conducted according to the following criteria:
1) in-depth knowledge of the scheduled bibliography
2) clarity and completeness of the presentation
3) correctness of pronunciation and prosodical reading of the Latin texts
4) correctness in the Italian translation of the scheduled texts
5) ability to analyze and comment on the texts in the program.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final grade is out of thirty (min.18 to pass the exam) and is composed as follows: 60% ability to translate and comment on the Latin texts in the program 40% knowledge of secondary bibliography
