Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the historical understanding of the fundamentals of Greek and Latin theatre. At the end of the course the student will have to prove: 1) knowledge of the historical development of the Greek tragedy, its forms and contents; 2) knowledge of the institutional framework of the Attic theatre; 3) ability to read and interpret ancient theatrical texts, commenting single passages and framing the text in the panorama of the author's production.
Prerequisites and basic notions
There are no specific requirements for this course. Greek and Latin texts will be read in Italian translation.
Program
The module is divided into two phases. In the first part, the historical history of tragedy is presented, discussing its origin and development up to classical times, with emphasis on forms, political-institutional aspects, and the relationship between playwright and community.
The second part deals with the reading (in Italian translation) of a Greek tragedy from the 5th century B.C. (Medea by Euripides) with analysis and discussion of the dramaturgical aspects and content.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
Mainly frontal lectures. In the final sessions of the course, there will be seinarial activities and exercises.
Learning assessment procedures
Expected knowledge and skills will be tested through an oral interview lasting approximately 20-25 minutes. The candidate will be asked to present topics covered in the course and to comment on one or more passages from the texts covered in class.
Evaluation criteria
