Period
2 A, 2 B
Learning objectives
The course aims at providing the students with the basic methodological tools that are required to understand and analyze the theatrical performance and its specific forms, functions, and meanings in different historical, social, and cultural contexts. At the end of the course students will be asked to recognize the mutual relationship between the elements of a performance (text, space, acting, scenography, costume, light, music) and the different importance that each of them have according to the specific periods of theatre history on which the programme will focus.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No prior knowledge is required.
Program
The course will examine various types of relationship between the performing arts and the figurative arts, focusing in particular on the following topics: evidence of ancient theatre in vase painting; representations of performing arts in medieval sculpture; scenography and theatrical architecture between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; the iconographic success of the commedia dell'arte; the pictorial representation of the theatre between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries; puppetry (puppets, marionettes, shadows); painting and theatre in the early twentieth century avant-garde; presence of the performative element in contemporary art and architecture.
In place of the lecture notes, attending students will prepare the exam on the following texts (to be studied in detail and punctually, not generic):
Non-attending students will replace the lecture notes with the study of the following text: Silvana Sinisi, "Cambi di scena", Bulzoni 1995 (pp. 105-193).
