Learning objectives
After retracing the principal historiographical steps of family history, the aim of the course is to thoroughly examine the main juridical, social and cultural changes between the 16th and 19th centuries, in particular the relationships between spouses and those between parents and sons and daughters. In addition, the course aims: to expand the historiography of this topic; to explain the different models of the western family, some of which are not based on blood ties; to look into the necessary knowledge for contextualizing this model; to analyze the sources; to develop the critical sense and autonomy of judgment.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Basic knowledge of the main historical and social changes of the modern and contemporary age. Good ability to examine and interpret a historical source.
Program
The course aims to provide the methodological tools and cultural fundamentals to understand the historical, cultural and social changes that conditioned the family institution in the 16th-19th centuries with particular reference to the Italian context. In particular, the following themes will be developed for the 16th-20th centuries: - symbology of the female body - symbology of the male body - the post-estia homeland - conjugal violence Other themes may be developed during the course of teaching based on the interests of the attending students.

Learning assessment procedures
For attending students, the exam consists in the preparation of a paper of about fifteen pages on a topic agreed with the teacher. For the elaboration of the thesis, at least three texts must be used among those listed in the reference texts or, alternatively, other studies agreed with the teacher. The thesis must be received by the teacher at least ten days before the oral examination, which will be based on the discussion of the thesis, on the topics covered during the course and on the material provided during the course. For non-attending students, the exam consists in the preparation of a paper of about fifteen pages on a topic agreed with the teacher. For the elaboration of the thesis, at least three texts must be used among those listed in the reference texts or, alternatively, other studies agreed with the teacher. The thesis must be received by the teacher at least ten days before the oral examination, which will be based on the discussion of the thesis and of a book chosen from those indicated in the reference texts on a topic other than that chosen for the thesis. Further bibliographical information will be provided during the course.
Evaluation criteria
The acquired knowledge will be evaluated; the ability to contextualize historical concepts and processes and to interpret them critically; the degree of maturity developed; the use of appropriate and scientific language. Further bibliographical information will be provided during the course.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The vote, expressed out of thirty, will be made up of the average of the grade of the thesis and that of the oral discussion.
