Academic calendar
The academic calendar shows the deadlines and scheduled events that are relevant to students, teaching and technical-administrative staff of the University. Public holidays and University closures are also indicated. The academic year normally begins on 1 October each year and ends on 30 September of the following year.

Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the knowledge to understand how the different cells, tissues, and organs of human body work together to maintain life. We will explain: a) the biophysical characteristics of the cellular membrane and principles of cell excitability, nerve conduction and synaptic transmission; b) the physiology of various organs and systems; c) the principles of homeostasis and mechanisms of his maintenance, and d) how the nervous system acquires and processes sensory information and plans and executes motor responses. At the end of the course the student will have to demonstrate knowledge of the basics of the functioning of the human body and use this knowledge in bio-technology.
Prerequisites and basic notions
In order to understand the course of Physiology, you must have first assimilated the basics of Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Biochemistry, in particular:
• Chemistry: the concept of pH, molarity, osmolality and osmotic pressure, diffusion;
• Physics: physics of gases, electro-physics, surface tension, Laplace's law, the basics of mechanics, statics and dynamics of fluids, laws of thermodynamics;
• Biology: biophysical characteristics of the cell membrane, structure of the cell and cell organelles, the genetic code with transcription and translation, protein synthesis, membrane receptors, intracellular signals and second messengers;
• Biochemistry: the main metabolic pathways, enzyme kinetics and mitochondrial enzymes, oxidative phosphorylation.

• Introduction to human physiology and definition of homeostasis.
• Biophysics of cell membranes: resting membrane potential, equilibrium potential, and action potential.
• Electrical and chemical synapses. Inhibitory and excitatory synapses.
• Anatomical and functional organization of the nervous system.
• Sensation and sensory processing: somatic sensory, visual, auditory and chemosensory system.
• Movement and its central control: motor system and motor control.
• Learning and memory. Plasticity of the nervous system.
• Visceral motor system and physiological bases of cardiovascular, respiratory and renal system.
• General features of the endocrine system and description of the main functions of hormones.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
Lessons will be delivered exclusively in presence. In case of limitations due to COVID, upon presentation of the relative request on the appropriate form, supports such as video recordings or additional teaching / bibliographic material will be provided.
Learning assessment procedures
The oral exam will focus on the topics of frontal lessons.
Evaluation criteria
Knowledge of the topics indicated in the course program, ability to explain using the technical terms of the discipline, ability to connect multiple topics of the discipline and ability to rework the acquired knowledge in a personal and critical way.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The mark is expressed in thirtieths, the minimum mark is 18/30 and the maximum mark is 30/30. “Laude” (30 cum laude) can be added to the maximum grade in cases where the student, having obtained the highest possible rating, has additional or extraordinary merits, which emerged during the examination.

Attendance
As stated in the Teaching Regulations for the A.Y. 2022/2023, attendance is not mandatory. However, professors may require students to attend lectures for a minimum of hours in order to be able to take the module exam, in which case the methods that will be used to check attendance will be explained at the beginning of the module.
