Learning objectives

The major goal of this course is to provide students with a better and more rigorous understanding of the key determinants, characteristics and implications of innovation processes (with regard to both technological and non-technological innovation) within contemporary economic systems. These issues can fruitfully be analyzed through the lens of the key theoretical constructs developed in the last years within the economics and innovation and innovation policies framework, with a special focus on the role played by for-profit firms, nonprofit organizations and political actors. These topics will be addressed through lectures as well as various forms of interactive teaching managed through the E-learning platform.

Program

The first part of the course will present the concept of innovation in economic thought, looking at the role of the "traditional" and "digital" entrepreneurs in the modern economy. Patents will be discussed as a legal instrument that recognizes the inventor's exclusive right to exploit the invention, and the issue of measuring innovation will be explored. Finally, the innovation policies implemented in Italy and Europe will be presented. The second part of the course outlines the differences between large and small companies, analyzing the driving factors of innovation for both contexts. Particular attention will be given to economic incentives and the role of public intervention, with a look at trends in Italy and Europe. Furthermore, the impact of artificial intelligence will be explored in depth, and, finally, the peculiarities of innovation in the post-Covid-19 pandemic pharmaceutical sector will be explored.
