Learning objectives
At the end of the course students are expected to: - acquire general knowledge on linguistic development and understand the fundamental milestones of L1 and L2 acquisition; - apply the tools for linguistic analysis in order to recognize and discuss the main phenomena characterizing L1 and L2 acquisition process at different levels of analysis (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon); - develop critical judgments about the interpretations provided within the different theoretical frameworks for the acquisition and learning mechanisms.
Prerequisites and basic notions
There are no specific prerequisites for this course; however, students are encouraged to attend the 'Language Learning' course after the 'General Linguistics' course because some of the linguistics basic concepts will be applied to the linguistic analysis.
Program
The course intends to provide the basic theoretical knowledge related to language acquisition studies and will introduce students to the specific terminology of the discipline. Both typical and atypical acquisition contexts will be considered, focusing on the topics of language and learning disorders (such as developmental dyslexia) and of bilingualism, also analyzing the interaction between these two dimensions. Furthermore, notions such as those of spontaneous vs. instructed learning, learning vs. acquisition, input (considering the different types, such as authentic input, modified input, motherese and foreign talk), intake and output will be discussed.
Some methodological aspects of acquisitional research will also be addressed, the on-line and off-line experimental techniques will be described, and their advantages and limitations will be discussed.
The course will then present in an historical perspective the main theories proposed to explain the L1 and L2 learning processes, referring mainly to the theories of behaviourism, innateness and cognitivism. In this context, the theories elaborated for second languages will be particularly studied: contrastive analysis, error analysis, the Monitor hypothesis, the output and interaction hypothesis. Finally, the interlanguage approach will be discussed.
We will also mention recent studies on the role of memory in language acquisition and the implications of these theories on language processing (L1 and L2).
Finally, some of the factors causing individual variability in learning will be discussed, in particular age, aptitude and motivation.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The course includes both lectures and collaborative learning tasks or group discussion on tasks on topics proposed by the teachers and that may include the use of the Moodle platform. The slides used during classes will be made available on the Moodle platform and will be part of the course program, together with the handbook.
Contents and materials will be the same for attending and non-attending students.
The course will be held in Italian. Erasmus students who have difficulties with the language are invited to contact the professor during the course and in any case before the exam.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam consists of a written test and will last 70 minutes.
The exam includes both open-ended and multiple-choice, articulated according to the following principles:
- multiple-choice or short-answer questions will verify the knowledge of the main concepts presented and discussed during the course;
- open-ended questions will address the students’ ability to (i) apply theoretical knowledge to the description of linguistic phenomena typical of L1 and L2 acquisition (students will be mostly asked to recognize, describe and explaine specific linguistic phenomena) and (ii) discuss critically and autonomously the main interpretative proposals put forward in the framework of the different theoretical approaches.
Evaluation criteria
The criteria on which the tests will be evaluated are:
- the substantial correctness of the responses and exhaustiveness of the content
- adequateness of the analytical skills
- expressive clarity and the capacity to discuss specific topics with appropiate technical language and specific textual competence
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final grade will be the result of the written test. The grade will be communicated to students on the ESSE3 platform and verbalized directly.

Type D and Type F activities
CFU D (attività a scelta dello studente)
- competenze linguistiche (diverse o ulteriori) rispetto a quelle obbligatorie
- tirocini o stage
- TALC (competenze trasversali).
Competenze trasversali TALC
