Learning objectives

The course, held in English, aims at introducing the students to English literature (from the Victorian to the contemporary period), with specific reference to a selection of canonical texts, and at presenting methodological approaches for the analysis of literary texts and genres. The course aims at providing a good knowledge of British literature (articulated in historical context, texts, genres, literary trends and authors) and the skills for a critical analysis and argumentation on different kinds of texts in their historical and cultural context. At the end of the course, students will be able to: -Analyse the literary texts of the programme in their historical and cultural context; - Apply an aware critical approach to literary texts and present an argumentation which shows knowledge of literary conventions -Express the acquired literary and critical competence in English clearly and coherently.

Prerequisites and basic notions

The certification of "saperi minimi" is necessary to take the final exam

Program

Madwomen in the Attic: novels, graphic novels and digital mapping.
The aim of the course is to provide a critical-methodological introduction to the study of English literature and culture during the 19th, 20th and 21st century with a specific focus on female writing (GOAL 5) and the relevance and the persistence in permutated forms of the image of the “madwoman in the attic.” (GOAL 10)
In line with the specificity of the curriculum, part of the course will be devoted to graphic narratives and to a digital humanities approach (digital literary mapping).

Didactic methods

Students who attend the course: the course will be held in English through lectures and will also include parts for reflection and discussion on the part of the students upon the topics under consideration. Slides related to the topics of the course and used during the lessons will be uploaded to Moodle and are part of the programme.
Students who do not attend: The programme for non-attending students is detailed in the "Programma section". They can access Moodle and the uploaded slides which are part of the programme.
All students can ask for further references or about the topics of the course during the receiving hours (as indicated on the webpage).
Teaching support:
Information and teaching materials will be uploaded in the Moodle platform, with the date of the lesson they refer to.
A specific tutoring service will be activated, the details of which will be explained in class and on the Moodle platform .
In addition, Prof. Battisti is available during the receiving hours which can also be arranged via ZOOM if necessary.
Lastly, a specific support and tutoring activity for inclusion and accessibility is being organised, particularly with regard to the Language and Literature courses in the French, English, Russian, Spanish and German areas. The activities will take place from November 2022 to June 2023 and will be advertised on the Department page.

Learning assessment procedures

The lessons will be in English. The exam will be an oral discussion in English on the topic of the course and the texts in the program (parts A,B,C).

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The oral exam will verify:
1. knowledge of the topics addressed during the course
2. argumentative and critical analysis skills

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The exam is not divided into parts and therefore the final grade will be determined by the oral exam

Contamination Lab

The Contamination Lab Verona (CLab Verona) is an experiential course with modules on innovation and enterprise culture that offers the opportunity to work in teams with students from all areas to solve challenges set by companies and organisations. Upon completion of a CLab, students will be entitled to receive 6 CFU D (type credit).

PLEASE NOTE: In order to be admitted to any teaching activities, including those of your choice, you must be enrolled in the academic year in which the activities in question are offered. Students who are about to graduate in the March-April sessions are therefore advised NOT to undertake extracurricular activities in the new academic year in which they are not enrolled, as these graduation sessions are valid for students enrolled in the previous academic year. Therefore, students who undertake an activity in an academic year in which they are not enrolled will not be granted CFU credits.

Stage e tirocini

Nel piano didattico della laurea triennale in Lingue e letterature per l’editoria e i media digitali (L11 ED-DH) è previsto un tirocinio/stage obbligatorio (CFU 6).

Le attività di stage sono finalizzate a far acquisire allo studente una conoscenza diretta in settori di particolare interesse per l’inserimento nel mondo del lavoro e per l’acquisizione di abilità professionali specifiche.
Le attività di stage sono svolte sotto la diretta responsabilità di un singolo docente presso studi professionali, enti della pubblica amministrazione, aziende accreditate dall’Ateneo veronese.
I crediti maturati in seguito ad attività di stage saranno attribuiti secondo quanto disposto nel dettaglio dal “Regolamento d’Ateneo per il riconoscimento dei crediti maturati negli stage universitari” vigente.
