Learning objectives

The course intends to provide the fundamental elements required for an understanding of the international economic relationships which developed in the Modern and Contemporary Age. After an outline of the historical conditions and the motives underlying the expansion of Europe, the course investigates forms of organisation of production, trade and circulation of the goods from the different areas (Europe, Africa, Asia America ...) in the 15th-20th centuries with particular emphasis on the problem of the structure of interregional and intercontinental trade routes. The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge in the field of Commerce History in order to acquaint historical events of the current market economy model and the comparisons among them.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prior knowledge is required. Consultation of a High School History manual is recommended

Program

Historical conditions and economic reasons for European expansion. The explorations, the geographical discoveries. Production and trade between the 15th and 18th centuries: goods, traffic routes, financial and commercial organization. World trade between 1500 and 1780. Poverty and inequality. History of industrialization in the contemporary age: a global perspective. World trade and globalization between the 19th and 20th centuries. State and institutions in the global economy. The future of globalization: political and economic changes. Introduction to the global history of science and technology. The future of globalization: political and economic changes. In the course of the lectures, themes of the history of marketing and business communication will be dealt with. The study of the text begins from chapter 4: World trade between 1500 and 1650: the exchanges of the Old World and the silver of the new p.145. For attending and non-attending students: Didactic materials and references for further information on the e-learning area will be made available.

Learning assessment procedures

For both attending and non-attending students, the exam consists of an interview aimed at ascertaining the candidate's overall maturity through questions on the program and on the texts indicated. During the oral exam to be held in the presence, unless otherwise indicated, various questions will be asked on the various topics of the program, in order to verify the communicative, expository and critical ability of the student. In this regard, particular attention will be paid: - to the depth and extent of the concepts learned; - the properties of language in the presentation of concepts and notions; - the ability to adequately connect the various acquired knowledge; - the ability to critically relate the events of the past with what is happening in the contemporary world.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Oral exam Marks out of thirty The evaluation will examine in particular the following skills: - depth and extension of the notions learned; - language properties in the exposition of concepts and notions; - ability to adequately link the various acquired knowledge; - ability to critically relate the events of the past with what is happening in the contemporary world.
