Learning objectives

This course aims to: • deepen the knowledge of modern and contemporary Italian literature • analyze Italian literary texts from a historical, critical, formal and symbolic point of view.

Prerequisites and basic notions

The student is required to have an excellent knowledge of the Italian language and a good knowledge of twentieth-century literary history.

Program

Montale's poetry: from Ossi di seppia to Satura. The course aims to explore Eugenio Montale's poetic work from Ossi di seppia (1925) to Satura (1971). Through the study of Montale's collections, conducted starting from the reading of the texts and their interpretation, the lessons focus on Montale's role in relation to the development of twentieth-century poetry. In this regard, in addition to the key places in the collections examined, the following will be taken into particular consideration: - Montale's relationship with the Italian tradition and with European models - The relationship with philosophy and history, with particular regard to the events of the Second World War - The evolution and role of Montale's lyrical characters (family figures, Annetta, Clizia, Volpe) and their symbolism - The relationship with criticism and the theme of Montale's "fortune"; in the second half of the twentieth century. The reading of critical and authorial prose will be accompanied by the analysis of poetic texts.

Didactic methods

Teaching will be delivered through frontal lessons; students are also invited to participate through short presentations of texts agreed with the teacher, and/or optional group activities to be carried out in the classroom.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam includes an oral exam on the topics covered during the lessons. Objectives: the student is required to know the topics covered in class and the reference bibliography. The objective of the exam will be to demonstrate the ability to analyze Montale's lyric poetry, with the aim of correctly reading a twentieth-century poetic text and placing it in the historical and critical context through the tools acquired in class. Contents of the exam: The oral exam focuses on the entire program of the course. Non-attending students are required to contact the teacher in good time in order to agree on a program suitable for carrying out the exam. Evaluation method: the result of the exam is expressed in thirtieths.

Evaluation criteria

The student will be asked to read and comment on a Montalian text. The exam may therefore be extended to the discussion of topics similar to those suggested by the text. The assessment of the study of the critical bibliography will take place during the oral interview.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The result of the interview, expressed in thirtieths, determines the final grade.
