Learning objectives

Comprehension and analysis of contemporary artworks; critic and historical attitude in using the methodological tools of the discipline; how to research in the field of Contemporary Art History; deep knowledge of the monographic topic of the course.

Prerequisites and basic notions

It is requested the knowledge and the ability to orient oneself within the chronologies, movements, currents and main artistic expressions of the period between the beginning of the 19th century and the end of the 20th.

Program

THE VENICE BIENNIAL: HISTORIES, INTERVENTIONS, DEVELOPMENTS AND PATHWAYS BETWEEN THE 19TH AND 21ST CENTURIES
The course will address, in three distinct modules, problematic aspects and crucial moments in the history of the Venice Art Biennale.
The first module will be dedicated to the birth of the biennial international art exhibitions in Venice, covering the history of the event up to the years of the fascist regime.
The second module will address the post-World War II years, with particular attention to the changes, developments and exhibition methods expressed in museum displays and practices.
The third module will focus on the post-1964 Biennials, with particular attention to social participation and the political interpretation of the event.

Lectures, with readings of texts and historical-critical analysis of images.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral interview

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

During the interview, the following will be assessed: - the level of knowledge and the ability to understand the topics, case studies and methodological problems addressed in class; - the critical application of knowledge and understanding skills; - independent judgement; - communication skills and mastery of language; - the ability to study in-depth through autonomous research.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final mark will be calculated as follows: - Failure to pass the exam: the candidate does not achieve any educational objective; - From 18 to 20: Level just enough. The candidate only achieves the minimum results set out in the "knowledge and understanding" point; - From 21 to 23: Fully sufficient level. The candidate achieves, in particular, the learning outcomes foreseen in the points "knowledge and understanding" and "application of knowledge and understanding"; - From 24 to 26: Good level. The candidate achieves the learning outcomes foreseen in the points "knowledge and understanding", "applied knowledge and understanding" and "autonomy of judgement"; - From 27 to 29: Very good level. The candidate achieves the learning outcomes foreseen in the points "knowledge and understanding", "applied knowledge and understanding", "autonomy of judgment" and "communication skills". - 30: High level. The candidate fully achieves the learning outcomes foreseen in all points - 30 cum laude: Excellent level. The candidate achieves the learning outcomes envisaged in all points in an excellent way, including the ability to study in depth through independent research.
