Learning objectives

The course aims to present the theories and to provide the tools for the study of the relationship between performing and visual arts, both in terms of iconographic evidence and of artists’ contribution to the conception or the construction of the scenography of the shows from antiquity to the digital age. At the end of the course, students will be able to understand the many possible interactions between performing and visual arts; analyse from the historical point of view the cultural, social, and ideological aspects underneath them; critically analyse some specific spectacular events in relation to the figurative documents directly or indirectly used to create them; acquire the ability to improve their theatrical knowledge in time.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Students who have not taken any other exam in Performing Arts must integrate the bibliography with Luigi Allegri, Prima lezione sul teatro, Rome-Bari, Laterza, 2012.

Program

Course contents
Through the analysis of theoretical pronunciations and specific scenic spaces, Prof. Simona Brunetti will highlight how the space of representation evolves on Western scenes, especially European ones, in relation to dramaturgy, clients and performers involved in the production. The last part of the course, held by prof. Pasqualicchio, is aimed at analyzing the revolution of scenic space that took place in the twentieth century: the abandonment of realistic scenography, the different conception of staging, the different relationship between actors and audience have given rise to an evolution of performing arts visible above all in the experiments of the avant-gardes and later in the experimental theatre, which pushed towards the rejection of traditional spaces, in particular that of the "teatro all'italiana", and led theatre theorists, directors and set designers to conceive spaces suited to new and diversified visions of the performance.

Didactic methods

Lectures alongside the analysis of sources of various kinds (archive documents, iconography, theatrical performances, films, video fragments, audio, etc.).
Conferences, sources, readings, and critical texts will be further specified during the course. Some materials, necessary for the preparation of the exam, will be available in the e-learning site. The critical commentary of the theatrical or cinematographic adaptations analysed during the lectures will be part of the examination.
N.B.
Students not able to attend the lessons are invited to send an e-mail to the teacher.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral exam with final evaluation expressed by a mark out of thirty.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Questions proposed to candidates will aim, on the one hand, to verify their learning of specific theoretical and methodological items; on the other hand, to test the ability to analyze scenic spaces and spectacular iconography by following the models proposed in class.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final graduation is determined by four questions worth three points each on the topics covered in the lessons.

Double degree

The University of Verona, through a network of agreements with foreign universities, offers international courses that enable students to gain a Double/Joint degree at the time of graduation. Indeed, students enrolled in a Double/Joint degree programme will be able to obtain both the degree of the University of Verona and the degree issued by the Partner University abroad - where they are expected to attend part of the programme -, in the time it normally takes to gain a common Master’s degree. The institutions concerned shall ensure that both degrees are recognised in the two countries.

Places on these programmes are limited, and admissions and any applicable grants are subject to applicants being selected in a specific Call for applications.

Prova finale
