Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the student with the knowledge and tools necessary for the application of the latest technologies for the assisted evolution of the vine.
Basic knowledge will be provided for the study of gene expression, its regulation and the biological role of grapevine genes. The tools necessary for the interpretation of the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of the plant and its responses to the environment will be illustrated. The student will attach the importance of knowledge of the genome, of the function of the genes contained on it and of the progress made in the biotechnology field during last years. The main stages of plant biotechnology will be illustrated, including in vitro cell cultures, the isolation of protoplasts, plant regeneration by somatic embryogenesis, genetic transformation and genome editing. Particular emphasis will be given to the possible applications of these new technologies for the development of a modern viticulture able to respond more quickly and effectively to the stresses to which the plant is subjected.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Basic knowledge of biology and genetics
Program
Genetic improvement of the vine: historical notes
The study of gene expression and the function of genes in lives
Transcriptomics and its tools
Transcriptomics applied to the study of the biology of the vine
Genomics and its tools
The genome of the vine, history and results
Biotechnologies in the study of vine biology and interaction with the environment
In vitro cultures of plant cells
Somatic embryogenesis in grapevine

Didactic methods
Lectures with the help of slides and scientific papers. Lessons will be delivered exclusively in person without any recourse to emergency online teaching methods. It will not be provided in other ways except limited to students who, due to Covid, cannot access the University, upon presentation of the relative request on the appropriate form. The delivery methods relating to this case will be decided by the teacher and may include sending the registration, organizing a lesson in streaming, sending additional material or organizing a meeting in person or remotely.
