Learning objectives
1. Introduction to microbiology, analytical methodologies and safety: The course aims to provide the student with the basic concepts of microbiology and to transfer knowledge on the analytical specificities for the study of microorganisms, particularly microorganisms of agro-food and industrial interest. Finally, it aims to provide the
knowledge to assess the safety of microorganisms, in relation to the possible ways of interaction with humans (through food, inhalation, etc.) and persistence in the environment (e.g., biofilm). The aim is that the student acquires the microbiological sensitivity to evaluate the safety of procedures and plants, to guarantee safety for operators and consumers.
2. Microbiological methods Laboratory: The practical experience aims to make the student acquire the manual skills of the microbiological laboratory, with particular reference to sterile manipulation of samples, and critical knowledge of the main techniques for sampling and tracking contaminating microorganisms in plant environments and food.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Being a course of the first year, first semester, there are no specific prerequisites different from those required for access to the degree course.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final grade includes the evaluation of the knowledge of the topics discussed both during the lectures and the lab modules. The drafting of the report of the lab modules is optional and can be evaluated from zero up to two points, which are added to those of the exam, if the latter is sufficient.
The exam concerning the theoretical part will take place in written form including both open questions and multiple choice questions.
