Learning objectives
The learning outcomes of the course are the following:
- to deepen, from a sociological point of view, the concept of communication, as a system of continuous exchange of socially constructed meanings;
- to illustrate the social implications of consumer behavior, highlighting its symbolic and relational traits;
- to introduce and to analyze the issue of safety and consumer protection.
At the end of the course, the student will be able:
- to recognize the cultural dimension in communication processes and consumption behaviors;
- to read and to comprehend the current rhetoric of vulnerability, implemented by the communication and consumption.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Through the theoretical sociological debate on the world of consumption, the course aims to make students reflect on the cultural and symbolic elements that characterise the dynamics of consumption. The analysis will focus on the communicative and emotional dimension of consumption.
Program
In the first part, some important sociological theories on consumption will be presented.
Subsequently, the course will develop three different aspects:
- media consumption
- emotions in the world of consumption
- the culture of surveillance

Learning assessment procedures
The examination will take place in written form.
The student must answer 6 semi-open questions relating to the examination programme.
The student will be given one and a half hours.
Evaluation criteria
- The degree of understanding of the subject matter of the discipline.
- The degree of understanding of the concepts and theoretical problems set out
- The mastery of the subject vocabulary.
- The ability to indicate correct and effective empirical exemplifications of the theoretical concepts covered.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
Each question is worth a maximum of 5 points
