Learning objectives
This seminar aims at introducing doctoral students to the steps involved in the development of their own research project, the writing of their project proposal, and the elaboration of a related working plan.
Prerequisites and basic notions
N/A
Program
The seminar is structured in two sessions.
The first session focuses attention on the distinctive characters of, and relations between, the objective(s) and the research question(s) or hypothesis of a research project. Further, it considers the fundamentals involved in the development of a research proposal (e.g. state of the art, theoretical framework, methodology, relevance, impact), including the research ethics. The second session starts with attention on the students’ preliminary ideas about the objective(s) and the research question(s) or hypothesis that may frame their own research project. Then, it provides inputs on the type of activities (e.g. Training & Secondment, Management, Research, Communication & Dissemination) needed to secure the achievement of both the student’s research project and his/her academic growth. Finally, it provides inputs on how to prepare a feasible working plan that conceives the activities to be implemented over the timeline of the PhD programme.
Didactic methods
The seminar uses a dialogic teaching approach that foresees continuous interactions between lecturers and students, and students’ active engagement in in-class assignments. Students are expected to bring their laptop or tablet to access teaching material needed during the session.
