Learning objectives

To acquire knowledge about: - authors, works, texts and cultural or literary contexts; some texts among the most important for the national literary identity; - resources needed to comprehend and interpretate texts; - the theme of the relationship between writing and landscape. To acquire competences in: - reading poetry, also in an intertextual view. At the end of the course students will be able to put the texts known in the adequate cultural context, and to analyze them focusing on the main formal aspects, main themes and the dynamic relationship that connects these two levels.

Program

Early twentieth-century poetry: from Pascoli to Montale
This course aims to explore the developments in Italian twentieth-century poetry from Pascoli to Montale. The main literary exponents and poetic currents of the first half of the century (Crepuscolarism, Futurism, Hermeticism) will be presented, as well as the activity of the most important journals active in the same historical period. Lectures will include the reading and commentary of poetic texts and critical essays chosen as particularly representative of the topics covered. The course will focus on:
- Pascoli and D'Annunzio: from tradition to European models.
- The reaction to D'Annunzio: the crepuscolari
- From the Symbolists to Marinetti: birth and representatives of Futurism
- Before and after the World War: Sbarbaro, Saba, Campana
- Ungaretti and the Hermeticists
- Montale's poetry: Ossi di seppia

Didactic methods

Teaching will be delivered through face-to-face lectures; students are also invited to participate through short presentations of texts agreed upon with the lecturer, and/or optional group activities to be conducted in the classroom.
Methods of teaching support:
Supplementary and supporting teaching materials will be uploaded to the teaching Moodle platform. However, students are invited to contact the lecturer by e-mail or during office hours.
Students who find themselves in the position of having to make up missed lectures should contact the lecturer.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam includes a written test on the topics covered during the lessons. Objectives: the student is required to know the topics covered in class and the reference bibliography. The objective of the test will be to demonstrate the ability to analyze the texts commented during the course and to discuss with the appropriate tools their historical and literary context, as well as the related critical bibliography. Contents of the test: The exam focuses on the entire program of the course. Structure of the test: the test consists of two open-ended questions, the first of which concerns a topic of twentieth-century literary history (an author, a theme, a collection of poems...), the second requires a commentary on one of the poetic texts in the exam program. Non-attending students are required to read the instructions provided and the additional bibliography for preparing for the exam on the course Moodle page. The structure of the test does not vary depending on whether the candidate is attending or not attending. Assessment method: the student will be asked to be able to comment on a text among those examined in class and to present a topic related to the literary history of the twentieth century. The assessment of the study of the critical bibliography indicated for the preparation of the exam will take place during the test. Assessment method: the result is expressed in thirtieths. Duration of the exam: 2 hours

Evaluation criteria

The ability to expound on topics covered in lectures, comment on twentieth-century poetic texts and discuss the relevant critical bibliography is assessed in the exam.
