Learning objectives

The course aims at providing students of the Bachelor's degree in Languages and Cultures for Tourism and International Commerce with an adequate knowledge of the Spanish culture of different periods, focusing on its literary, historical, geographical and anthropological aspects. At the end of the course, students will acquire a sound knowledge of the issues covered by the module (historical and cultural context, main writers/texts/movements/genres of the period examined). With regard to the applied and communication skills, students will be able to critically comment the primary texts listed in the syllabus, in relation both to their historical and cultural context and literary specificities, as well as to express the acquired knowlegde in a clear and consistent way.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prerequisites required. However, even partial knowledge of the Spanish language is considered useful.

Program

The course will provide the coordinates for the knowledge of the main movements, authors and genres of Spanish literature between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, focusing in particular on the declinations of violence, conflict and subjection in different historical-social contexts and distinct literary forms (novel, short story, poetry, theatre). Parallel to the presentation of the historical-cultural context (the First Republic, the crisis of '98, the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, the Second Republic, the dictatorship of Franco) and the main literary movements (Realism, Modernism, the Avant-garde, the Generation of '27), an in-depth study of fundamental texts of the period is envisaged with particular attention to the female figure and the links with expressive forms such as painting and cinema.
The program is divided into four parts:
- Part I: Violence and the condition of women in turn-of-the-century literature. Emilia Pardo Bazán's short stories (a selection).
- Part II: Poetic voices between Modernism and the Avant-garde at the dawn of the Civil War (an anthological selection).
- Part III: Paths of eroticism and violence in Lorca's dramatic work (one work to choose between the two proposed).
- Part IV: The novel of the posguerra. Camilo José Cela and Carmen Laforet (one work to choose).
It is planned to accompany the study of the texts with partial screenings of cinematographic works.
A detailed summary of the topics covered, together with the complete calendar of teaching activities, will be indicated at the beginning of the course. The history of literature manuals and the scheduled texts will be indicated by the professor and available at the University Libraries.

Didactic methods

Attending students: the course will consist of lectures with active participation by students. The lessons will be held in Italian. The course materials will be uploaded to the Moodle platform of the course with a progressive number corresponding to the course module.
Non-attending students: the following program is also valid for non-attending students, who, however, are required to contact the teacher during office hours. Throughout the academic year, an individual office service managed by the teacher is available, at the times indicated on the web pages (with the need to fix by email a specific appointment) and constantly updated. Students who find themselves in the position of having to recover missed lessons can contact the teacher.
Teaching support methods: the supplementary and support teaching materials will be uploaded to the Moodle platform of the course.
Potential interested parties are also informed that a specific support and tutoring activity is available for inclusion and accessibility, in particular for the Language and Literature courses in the French, English, Russian, Spanish and German areas. The activities will take place from November 2024 to June 2025 and will be advertised on the Department page.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is oral in Italian and consists of an interview aimed at verifying the depth and breadth of the knowledge acquired, the analytical and argumentative ability, and the propriety of language. The topics to be tested concern the entire program. Students may also take a partial test (ongoing verification, duration 2 academic hours), obtaining a grade that will be part of the final grade.

Evaluation criteria

The depth and breadth of the knowledge gained, the analytical and argumentative ability, the ability to connect the different topics covered in the course, the ownership of language, the clarity of presentation will be evaluated.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be the result of the partial written test (optional) and the oral exam as a whole and will be expressed in thirtieths.
