Learning objectives

On finishing this course, the student will be able: - to identify the principles of terminology, mainly in the French-speaking context; - to acquire the methods and the main IT tools of terminography; - to apply these concepts and instruments in French-Italian translation in the fields of tourism and international business; - to have a language competence in French corresponding to level C1 of the CEFR.

Prerequisites and basic notions

In order to pass the exame it is COMPULSORY to have completed the exams of Language and Literature of the 2nd year.
The oral examination concerns the entire program and can be taken after obtaining C1 level.
The verification of language level is based on the certifications issued by the CLA (Centro Linguistico d'Ateneo) or other institutions recognized by the MIUR (DELF C1, DFP DALF C1, Esabac, please consult the dedicated web page on the CLA website) and is preparatory to the oral examination.

Program

This course deals with the principles of terminology and terminography in relation with specialized translation in the fields of tourism and international business.
The contents include: the theories of terminology, especially in the Francophone tradition; the term; the domain; the definition; the corpus; the theories of translation; pragmatic translation; the analysis of given translations; the choice of equivalents.
Some practical activities will be proposed, including the writing of French-Italian terminological records and the translation of texts about tourism and international business.

Didactic methods

The lectures will be held in French.
Didactic methods include:
• Lectures on the main theoretical notions.
• Examples and case studies.
• Terminology works and translations.
The syllabus, the course materials, and any further details will be published on the dedicated E-learning platform (Moodle).
The lecturer is available to give further instructions by e-mail or during office hours.
Missed lectures can be made up via the materials posted on Moodle and by contacting the lecturer.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral examination, entirely in French, aims at ensuring the acquisition of theoretical notions and the ability to apply them in practical cases.
Students attending the course will pass a part of the exam (written) in continuous assessment.
For non-attending students, the oral examination will take place on the entire syllabus; further details will be posted on Moodle.
ERASMUS students are requested to contact the lecturer at the beginning of the course for clarification.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The oral interview will test:
- the acquisition of theoretical notions of terminology and specialised translation;
- the ability to exemplify;
- the acquisition of methodology;
- clarity.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The evaluation is expressed in /30.
The final grade will be obtained from the average of the language level converted to /30 based on the indications in the "Vademecum normativo per gli studenti dell'Area di Lingue e Letterature Straniere" and that of the oral examination and will be expressed in /30.
Linguistic level required
French C1 level is required.
