Learning objectives

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to: - describe the basic concepts of grammar; - apply their theoretical knowledge to concrete linguistic data, i.e., analyze German sentences with respect to the so-called "Felderanalyse", the syntactic functions and the other concepts that will be introduced during classes; - appraise the importance of the theoretic framework for the analysis and interpretation of data; - demonstrate to have the German language skills that correspond to the B1 level of the CEFR.

No previous knowledge on the subjects is necessary

Program

"The Structure of the German Sentence: Introduction to Syntactic Analysis"
This course introduces students to the syntactic analysis of German, including the analysis of syntactic constituents, parts of speech, and syntactic functions and relations. Special emphasis is placed on the notion of topological fields, also known as "Felderanalyse," which is specific to the German grammatical tradition.

Didactic methods

Classes will be held in Italian; further materials will be uploaded on the Moodle platform

Learning assessment procedures

Written exam. The exam can be taken either in Italian or German and consists of two parts: (i) basic theoretical concepts and (ii) exercises (analysis of both simple and complex sentences from a topological perspective).
The exam can be taken only after completion of the B1 level of language competence.
Supplementary bibliographical references will be provided to students who do not attend classes.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The five exercises in the written paper will be assigned different points each, from 3,5 to 7,5. The final grade is expressed as x/30

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is determined by the average of the grade achieved in the examination paper with the grade indicated in the language proficiency certificate
