Learning objectives
In the context of the theoretic and critical investigation of French literary studies provided in the two-year master’s degree program, this course aims at developing both historical and methodological competences. As for the students attending the course in French literature for publishing and journalism, this course offers insights on the history of French publishing and on the relationship between literature or literary criticism and jouralism. At the end of this course, students shall acquire knowledge in the field of the recent history of French literary criticism and related methods (LM37) and the history of publishing in France (LM19), along with the capacity of applying such knowledge to literary research as well as to teaching French.

Program
Historical, critical and theoretical-methodological introduction to intertextuality.
From resumption to variation and from rewriting to transfiguration, intertextuality is a driving force in the future of literature. As an introduction to the course, a theoretical presentation of the notion of intertextuality in the context of the history of French criticism will precede readings of extracts aimed at illustrating and problematizing intertextual dynamics within literary studies.
Modulo 1
The first part of this Master course will be devoted to the myth of Cleopatra. After having presented the milestones in the history of the last pharaoh, we will introduce ourselves to the variations of the myth of the “Egyptian”. Once this introductory framework has been established, we will focus on the heroine of the first French humanist tragedy: Cleopatra Captive (1553) by Étienne Jodelle. In a choice of passages taken from Cleopatra (1595) by Nicolas de Montreux, we will observe the deployment of a mythical perspective which persists because, if kingdoms are mortal, myths never die. Students will also have the opportunity to reflect on the critical editing of texts. All works will be posted on moodle.
Part 2
The second part of the course will take into consideration the reuse of Greek mythical material in the dramatic writing of the first half of the 20th century (selected examples), and more specifically, in the production of Jean Giraudoux (La guerre de Troie n'aura pas lieu, 1935; Électre, 1937) to show how the use of ancient myths is deployed in different forms (burlesque, rereading, updating, resumption of great ancient models) while presenting a modern sense of tragic without transcendence and allowing the plays to convey a reflection on the place of man in the polis.
The detailed program, a choice of texts and bibliographical information will be provided at the beginning of the course.
Students who cannot attend the lessons should contact Paola Perazzolo (paola.perazzolo@univr.it) for bibliographical details on the program.
