Learning objectives
In this course students will learn methods and best practices for organizing data and representing knowledge, according to well established formats and technologies (e.g., Semantic Web / Linked Data). Special emphasis will be given on their usage in application domains related to the Humanities. At the end of the course students: will learn the principles and basic notions of data and knowledge representation; will learn state-of-the-art formalisms for data and knowledge representation; and, will learn how to apply methods for modelling data and representing knowledge.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Basic computer science knowledge is a prerequisite, and it is suggested to have attended some form of introductory courses in databases and basic programming.
Program
The course will cover topics across four fundamental areas
- From data to information: approaches to data structures and digital representation of data and knowledge.
- Basic web technologies for representing and sharing knowledge on the web: HTTP, URI, HTML, CSS, XML, JSON, XPath
- Fundamentals of linked data application: RDF, SPARQL, SHACL, Linked Open Data
- Fundamentals of Knowledge Representation: Ontologies, Knowledge Graphs
Bibliography
Didactic methods
Lectures will combine presentations of content with practical activities.
It is recommended to attend lectures regularly and complete any assigned exercises. Pointers to the reference bibliography will be provided during the respective lectures.
Educational support: materials and resources will be provided during the course to support the lectures, and uploaded to the Moodle page. Additionally, the instructor will be available during office hours.

The exam will consist in the realization of a team project and related individual discussion.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The individual assessment of the team project is focussed on assessing the correctness, completeness and interoperability of the team project, and more importantly on the contribution to the project by each individual student.
