Prerequisites and basic notions

A B2 level of English is a prerequisite for enrolling in the course. This level ensures that students have a solid foundation in grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension skills, which are necessary to successfully engage with the advanced content of the course and further improve their English writing abilities.

Program

Course Description:
This 56-hour course is designed for dentistry students and professionals at the B2 level of English proficiency. The course aims to develop the language skills necessary for effective communication in dental practice. Through targeted vocabulary, reading, writing, speaking, and listening exercises, students will gain confidence in using English in a dental context. The course also covers the specific terminology and phrases commonly used in dentistry, patient communication, and professional interactions.

Course Objectives:
Develop a strong foundation of dental-specific vocabulary and terminology.
Improve the ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues in English.
Enhance reading comprehension of dental texts, journals, and research papers.
Practice writing professional documents, case reports, and patient instructions.
Build confidence in speaking and listening in clinical settings.
Course Structure:
Module 1: Introduction to Dental Terminology (8 hours)

Topics: Basic dental anatomy, common dental procedures, dental instruments.
Activities: Vocabulary building exercises, reading and discussing dental case studies, matching exercises for instruments and procedures, glossary creation.
Assessment: Vocabulary quiz.
Module 2: Patient Communication (10 hours)

Topics: Patient history taking, explaining procedures, discussing treatment options.
Activities: Role-playing patient interviews, listening to and analyzing patient-doctor conversations, writing patient instructions and consent forms.
Assessment: Oral role-play assessment and written patient communication task.
Module 3: Reading and Understanding Dental Literature (10 hours)

Topics: Reading dental research articles, understanding abstracts, and conclusions.
Activities: Reading and summarizing research papers, analyzing case studies, vocabulary exercises for academic language.

Module 4: Writing in a Dental Context (8 hours)

Esame Scritto - Abilità Ricettive e Produttive: L'esame scritto valuta sia le abilità ricettive che quelle produttive. Le abilità ricettive comprendono la comprensione di testi scritti, mentre le abilità produttive si concentrano sulla capacità di esprimersi in forma scritta, utilizzando un linguaggio appropriato e strutturato. Durante l'esame, gli studenti dovranno dimostrare di saper analizzare e comprendere testi complessi, nonché di produrre elaborati scritti che siano chiari, coerenti e grammaticalmente corretti.
Esame Orale: L'esame orale è progettato per valutare la capacità degli studenti di comunicare in modo efficace e fluente. Gli studenti saranno chiamati a discutere vari argomenti, rispondere a domande e dimostrare competenze linguistiche avanzate, tra cui la capacità di argomentare, esprimere opinioni e interagire in modo appropriato in contesti accademici o professionali.
