Learning objectives
The course aims to enable the student to acquire an updated knowledge of the topics of: cell biology, developmental and aging biology, and molecular biology.
At the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- understand the diversity between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells; the basic processes of DNA science and the flow of information leading from DNA to RNA to proteins; the mechanisms of functioning and regulation of these processes;
- know the cell cycle and its checkpoints and the mechanisms of cell proliferation;
- know how to describe cell reproduction of the sexed type (meiosis) and the general principles of fertilization and development of the animal cell;
- know and be able to apply the scientific method through the description of experiments that have elucidated molecular biological mechanisms; and
- understand the current and future possible applications of basic biological knowledge and molecular biology in modern biomedicine.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Preparing to pass the national test for access to the CdLMC is a sufficient prerequisite. There are no prerequisites beyond the basic knowledge required to access the course, verified simultaneously as the admission test. Students admitted to the course with a vote of less than 5 points in the discipline of Biology will be assigned additional educational obligations (OFA) to be fulfilled in the first year of the Course.

Learning assessment procedures
The examination is composed of a written test and an oral test aimed at assessing the knowledge of the contents of the course. The written test is propaedeutic to the oral test. It consists of a test comprising multiple answer queries, true or false, completions, correspondences and open answers related to the topics included in the course syllabus.
Evaluation criteria
The tests (written and oral) assess the level of knowledge of theoretical content, language property in the description of molecular and biological structures and processes, logical/deductive and synthesis skills.
The final grade is given by evaluating each test, considered positive for scores equal to or greater than 18/30.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The exam of Biology and Molecular Biology will be passed if the overall evaluation of the course is greater than or equal to 18/30. The student can withdraw or refuse the proposed grade and repeat the exam at a later date.
