Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge of the birth, evolution and consolidation of the language of the Italian literary tradition. Particular attention will be paid to those moments in the history of the Italian language that initiated processes of reflection and grammaticalisation that were then incorporated into the literary system, and to the relationship between language and textual tradition. Through the analysis of an author, a text or a moment in the history of the Italian language, the direct reading of texts and the relative exercises, students will acquire the ability to relate the history of language and the history of the text; they will also acquire the skills aimed at interpreting texts in relation to the context (historical, literary, genre) in which they were written and at identifying and applying the most pertinent methods of linguistic analysis for the study of each literary text in relation to textual tradition and context.
Prerequisites and basic notions
General knowledge of the history of the Italian language and literature.
Program
The course includes the reading and analysis of Pietro Bembo's "Prose della volgar lingua", published in 1525. The treatise plays a fundamental role in defining the model of grammar and style of Italian lyric poetry and in the first part of the sixteenth century it provided a temporary solution to the questione della lingua, which arose precisely in those years: reading the "Prose" 500 years after their publication will allow us to verify how the linguistic model for the language of poetry and literary prose was formed. The course will also outline the history of the treatise through Bembo's autographs and the first printed editions.
