Learning objectives

The course aims to provide the fundamental notions of algebra and mathematics: mathematical symbology, basic notions of naive set theory, main proof techniques, and basic algebraic structures. At the end of the course, the student will have to: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of basic mathematical concepts, techniques, and structures; Know how to apply the knowledge acquired to recognize, reason, and use basic mathematical concepts, techniques, and structures rigorously; Be able to recognize the basic mathematical structures and notions and choose appropriate techniques and methodologies for the resolution of basic and advanced IT problems; Know how to argue in a technical and precise way basic and advanced mathematical and IT problems; Be able to expand his/her knowledge and acquire the knowledge necessary to autonomously continue the studies both in mathematics and in IT areas, in particular in the context of formal IT methods.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No specific prerequisites are required.

Program

1. Sets: operations on sets (membership, union, intersection, power set, product).
2. Relations and Functions: total and partial functions, equivalence relations, partitions, ordering relations.
3. Natural Numbers: definitions by primitive recursion, main operations on natural numbers, construction of integers and rationals; factorisation and the fundamental theorem of arithmetic. Congruences.
4. Cardinality: Finite and infinite sets, equipotence, ordering of cardinalities; Cantor's theorem and the uncountability of the reals.
5. Algebraic Structures: Monoids, groups, rings, and lattices (definitions and main properties).
