Learning objectives

The course aims to illustrate the properties of sounds, psychophysical acoustics, the functioning of the auditory system and the causes that determine hearing disorders in childhood, adulthood and geriatrics and the correlation between hearing loss and communication/language. MODULE AUDIOLOGY The module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the diagnostic-therapeutic acts of audiological relevance, to illustrate the basic notions regarding the functioning of the auditory system and the causes that determine hearing disorders both in childhood and adulthood-geriatrics, with particular attention to the correlation between hearing loss and communication. MODULE ACOUSTIC PHYSICS The module aims to introduce some physical concepts characteristic of acoustics. It focuses on the definition and properties of sounds, in the time domain, in the frequency domain and on their propagation in free fields and in closed environments. Psychophysical acoustics is explored in depth: the concept of acoustic sensation is developed and the effects of noise on humans are clarified. Furthermore, the physics of the ear is introduced, through the description of those physical phenomena that are linked to the physiology of the ear. A mention is given to the physics of phonation. Finally, the concept of auditory bionics is introduced and the main bionic aids and their sound processing mechanisms are described. MODULE BASIC AUDIOMETRY The course aims to lead the student to learn the basics of the electrical changes that characterize the hearing impaired patient, provide the definition and applications of audiometry: clinical audiogram and audiometric examination, qualitative and quantitative losses, hearing disorders and classification of hearing loss, masking techniques, vocal audiometry and related tests. Notes on hearing aids, hearing aid fitting and child audiology in school age and relative knowledge of the techniques and equipment for performing audiometric examinations.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade will be calculated by averaging the grades obtained in the 3 modules that make up the course.
