Learning objectives

The teaching is aimed at learning the fundamental concepts and related legal terminology in English in the area of internal market freedoms and labour relations from an EU legal perspective. At the end of the classes, students will have acquired the ability to assess EU legislation and case law, as well as legal texts and commentaries, dealing with the topics covered, understanding their structure, scope and related vocabulary, and elaborating a presentation in written and oral form.

Prerequisites and basic notions

None.

Program

The teaching, delivered in English, will cover the following topics:
- the EU internal market as a common economic area for businesses and citizens,
- basics of the functioning of the EU internal market and operating principles (mutual recognition, non-discrimination on grounds of nationality, restrictions);
- basics of the internal market freedoms (free movement of workers, freedom to provide services and right of establishment);
- autonomy and subordination and notion of worker between domestic and EU law;
- qualification of the relationship and protections in Directive 2024/2831 on work on digital platforms.

With respect to these topics, the framework of EU legislation and case law will be used to learn the fundamental notions and legal terminology in the English language, in order to exercise both comprehension skills of written texts and expression skills in written and oral form.

Didactic methods

The teaching, of 36 hours in total, combines lectures in which the basic concepts of the topics to be covered in the program will be provided and practice-oriented classes focused on the exercise of language skills (reading comprehension exercises, fill-in-the-blank, vocabulary, reading of legal texts).
To encourage the interactive approach and practical activities during the lectures, the maximum number of students allowed to attend each edition of the teaching is set at 50.

Learning assessment procedures

The final exam consists of:
- a written test based on the reading and comprehension of a legal text in English, covering the topics to be taught;
- a group work involving the assignment and in-depth study of a topic addressed in class, in relation to which a written paper in English and its oral presentation, also in English, will be required from the members of each group.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The exam, taken as a whole, is aimed at testing:
- the ability to understand the content, context, and vocabulary of a legal text in English in order to extract its main information, identify its vocabulary, and understand the structure of the language;
- the ability to develop a presentation, in written and oral form, of legal concepts and topics in English using the appropriate vocabulary.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is expressed in thirtieths and is distributed as follows:
- the written test is worth 40% of the final grade;
- group work is worth the remaining 60% of the final grade.
