Learning objectives
The course is intended to provide the student with the knowledge of changes taking place in the world of work as read and examined through the lens of sociology of work.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to elaborate on issues and intervention actions concerning processes of change in the world of work, in relation to different types of workers and organisations, differences between industry sectors as well as private and public contexts.
Prerequisites and basic notions
No preliminary knowledge is required.
Some basic concepts will be covered during the initial part of the course.
Program
The course is divided into three parts.
In the FIRST part the general aspects of the work are addressed. Retracing the reflections made by a series of authors who have characterized the development of the sociology of work, the specificities of the discipline and the contribution that it has given to the interpretation of changes in work over the years are addressed. In particular, a path will be developed that goes from Taylor to digitalisation, with the consolidation of the working society. The transversal theme that runs through the entire first part is that of the conditions of people at work.
The reference text for the study of the themes relating to the first part is: G. Gosetti, Percorsi di sociologia del lavoro. Da Taylor alla società dei lavori, FrancoAngeli, Milano, 2024.
In the SECOND part, the different dimensions of the sociological study of work are taken into consideration (labour market, organizational models, training, quality of work, etc.), paying particular attention to the changes underway and the specific conditions of the different populations involved (young people, women, immigrants, etc.).
The reference text for the study of the themes relating to the second part is: A. Carreri, G. Gosetti (ed.), Interpretare il lavoro: chiavi e traiettorie, FrancoAngeli, Milano, 2024.
In the THIRD part the activities will be developed in laboratory form. Also through meetings and seminars with the involvement of external experts, in an interactive manner, various topics addressed in the first two parts will be explored, elaborated and discussed with the participants. The unifying theme of the different activities carried out in the laboratory will be that of the quality of working life. In particular, four thematic workshops of three hours each will be developed.
For those who do not participate in the workshops (at least three out of four meetings), the reading of a substitute text for the workshop activity is expected: G. Gosetti, La qualità della vita lavorativa. Lineamenti per uno studio sociologico, FrancoAngeli, Milano, 2022.
Bibliography
Didactic methods
The course includes lectures on the topics covered by the course and moments of direct involvement of the students during the lessons, with assignment of readings and classroom discussions of the topics covered in class. The use of different teaching materials (texts, films, etc.) is expected to support the discussion of the contents covered during the lessons. All lessons will take place in person, excluding those relating to laboratories (remote).
During the lessons, adequate space will be left for questions, to collectively discuss any doubts and curiosities, while referring to the individual office hours for specific clarifications.
For the third part of a laboratory nature, in-depth seminars are planned, also with the presence of external experts on the topics covered, moments of elaboration and discussion of materials of various kinds, with the direct involvement of the participants. The teacher will make the materials available to work on, but the participants will also be asked to search for information (documents, data, research reports, etc.) for the laboratory work. The laboratory activities are included in the total number of hours of the course and will take place remotely.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam takes place in oral form, has a variable duration, but not less than 15 minutes, without any distinction between attending and non-attending students and includes a comparison in terms of questions on the topics covered in class. Laboratory activities will also be discussed during the exam.
To pass the exam, students must demonstrate that they understand the theoretical and methodological principles underlying the sociological reading of work and organization; to be able to identify the main current work issues and their implications for work organization policies; to be able to present the requested arguments with rigor and completeness and with language relevant to the subject; to know how to operationally translate the contents learned, contextualizing them in different organizational contexts.
No intermediate assessments are foreseen.
Evaluation criteria
The exam requires a mark out of thirty and tests knowledge of the sociological approaches necessary for reading and interpreting the work and the main problems of the changes taking place.
The student's abilities foreseen by the training objectives will also be ascertained.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The course does not include modules with single assessments.
