Learning objectives

Starting from introduction to electrical network analysis, the course aims to provide students with the fundamental notions of analog and digital electronics useful for understanding how sensors and medical devices work. At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the operation of traditional analog and digital circuit diagrams, to know and measure the main static and dynamic performance parameters and to be able to use the basic elements of main specification languages and automatic design and simulation tools. The students will also have to demonstrate that they have the necessary skills to continue their studies independently in the field of analog and digital electronics.

Prerequisites and basic notions

In order to be successful in acquiring the course contents, at the beginning the student shall be very confident with the following concepts:
- Mathematics: basic notions; derivatives and integrals; differential equations.
- Physics: basics of mechanics and electricity.

The course is composed by two 6 CFU modules

- module 2: Electronics
ELECTRIC CIRCUITS
Electric quantities: voltage, current, resistance. Electric bipole. Ohm law. Electric power. Kirchhoff laws.
DC circuits analysis. Node potential method. Mesh current method. Effect superposition principle. Thevenin equivalent circuit. Norton equivalent circuit. Load matching. Voltage-current relationship of capacitors and inductors. Electrostatic and magnetic energies. Transient analysis of first order circuits. Transient analysis of second order circuits. AC circuits analysis. Active, reactive and apparent power. Passive filters. Three-phase systems. Three-phase power and Aron’s insertion
ELECTRONICS
Analog and digital signals. Basics of Boolean algebra. General architecture of an electronic system. Diodes and transistors. Transistor as an amplifier and as a switch (Switch). Switch of type n and p. CMOS inverter. Performance metrics (levels, logic threshold, noise immunity margins, rise and fall times, propagation, energy and power consumption). Static CMOS logic gates. Synthesis of arbitrary logic functions in static CMOS technology. Dynamic logic gates, pass transistors, multiplexers. Classification of memories, memory stack. ROM, SRAM, DRAM, Non-volatile memories. Interconnections. Determination of parameters and delays of interconnections. Outline of A / D, D / A converters. Notes on FPGA programmable components and ASICs.

Didactic methods

Students are strongly advised to attend lectures, which include explaining the theory and carrying out exercises on the analysis of simple electrical circuits and electronic circuits. For the study, students are invited to use the course materials provided by the lecturers and to solve the exercises they propose. Simulation activities of electrical and electronic circuits are also organized by means of LTSPICE.

Learning assessment procedures

The assessment of preparation is carried out through two written tests, one for the ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS section of the course, the other for the ELECTRONICS section. The duration of each test is 2 hours.
ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS
Students are proposed a written test consisting of two open questions on the content of the course (with the aim of verifying the level of theoretical knowledge) and an exercise about the analysis of an electrical circuit (with the aim of verifying the problem solving skills). The duration of the written test is 2 hours. A maximum score of 10 is assigned to each question, while a maximum score of 11 is assigned to the solution of the electrical circuit. If the written test is evaluated at least 15/30, with a score of at least 4 on the exercise, the assessment can be employed for the final evaluation. If the test is graded at least 18/30 then the test for this section of the course is passed.
ELECTRONICS
The (written) test for this section of the course is made up of 5 questions, of which 2 are open questions or multiple-choice questions, and 3 in the form of an exercise on the analysis or synthesis of a digital circuit / system. The maximum score attributed to each question is indicated in the text. If the test for this section of the course is graded at least 15/30, then the score can be considered for the final score. If the test is graded at least 18/30 then the test for this section of the course is passed.

Evaluation criteria

To pass the exam, the score assigned to each test must be at least 15/30, with a score of at least 4/30 in the exercise on electrical circuits. In addition, the score obtained in each test is valid only until the start of the lectures of the related part of the course in the following academic year.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final mark is obtained as the arithmetic average of the scores assigned to the two modules, rounded to the nearest integer. The exam is passed if this average is at least equal to 18/30.

Type D and Type F activities

Le attività formative di tipologia D sono a scelta dello studente, quelle di tipologia F sono ulteriori conoscenze utili all’inserimento nel mondo del lavoro (tirocini, competenze trasversali, project works, ecc.). In base al Regolamento Didattico del Corso, alcune attività possono essere scelte e inserite autonomamente a libretto, altre devono essere approvate da apposita commissione per verificarne la coerenza con il piano di studio. Le attività formative di tipologia D o F possono essere ricoperte dalle seguenti attività.

1. Insegnamenti impartiti presso l'Università di Verona

Comprendono gli insegnamenti sotto riportati e/o nel Catalogo degli insegnamenti (che può essere filtrato anche per lingua di erogazione tramite la Ricerca avanzata).

Modalità di inserimento a libretto: se l'insegnamento è compreso tra quelli sottoelencati, lo studente può inserirlo autonomamente durante il periodo in cui il piano di studi è aperto; in caso contrario, lo studente deve fare richiesta alla Segreteria, inviando a carriere.scienze@ateneo.univr.it il modulo nel periodo indicato.

2. Attestato o equipollenza linguistica CLA

Oltre a quelle richieste dal piano di studi, per gli immatricolati dall'A.A. 2021/2022 vengono riconosciute:

  • Lingua inglese: vengono riconosciuti 3 CFU per ogni livello di competenza superiore a quello richiesto dal corso di studio (se non già riconosciuto nel ciclo di studi precedente).
  • Altre lingue e italiano per stranieri: vengono riconosciuti 3 CFU per ogni livello di competenza a partire da A2 (se non già riconosciuto nel ciclo di studi precedente).

Tali cfu saranno riconosciuti, fino ad un massimo di 6 cfu complessivi, di tipologia F se il piano didattico lo consente, oppure di tipologia D. Ulteriori crediti a scelta per conoscenze linguistiche potranno essere riconosciuti solo se coerenti con il progetto formativo dello studente e se adeguatamente motivati.

Modalità di inserimento a libretto: non è previsto l'inserimento dell'insegnamento nel piano di studi. Solo in seguito all'ottenimento dell'Open Badge verranno automaticamente convalidati i CFU a libretto. La registrazione dei CFU in carriera non è istantanea, ma ci saranno da attendere dei tempi tecnici.

Modalità di frequenza

La natura interateneo del corso di studi è data dalla cooperazione dei tre Atenei nella messa a disposizione dei docenti. L'erogazione didattica avviene pertanto nella sede amministrativa e didattica di Verona e non negli Atenei partner. Non è quindi possibile frequentare questo corso di laurea triennale nell'Ateneo di Trento o di Modena-Reggio Emilia; tuttavia, è possibile usufruire degli spazi studio degli Atenei partner, grazie all'accordo che intercorre.

Come riportato nel Regolamento Didattico per l'A.A. 2022/2023, la frequenza al corso di studio non è obbligatoria.
