Programma
This course aims to provide an in-depth exploration of reading comprehension processes, covering both lower-order and higher-order processes, in typical and atypical populations. After presenting a detailed analysis and critical discussion of reading comprehension in typically developing populations, the focus will shift to atypical populations, including children with developmental dyslexia and bilingual children learning to read in a second language, who are reported to face significant, albeit different challenges in dealing with texts.
A particular emphasis will be also placed on eye-tracking methodologies as a means to investigate the mechanisms underlying reading comprehension. Eye-tracking technology, indeed, can provide an online, fine-grained window into how readers process texts by measuring eye movements, thus offering additional insights into the linguistic and cognitive processes involved in reading and comprehending a text. Finally, the notions of emergent literacy and home literacy environment will be presented and discussed, along with research findings on the effects of early shared-reading programs and targeted literacy interventions for vulnerable children.

Palazzo di Lingue - Co-Working [04 - M] | Elena Florit | Understanding children’s reading comprehension: The role of cognitive and linguistic components. This lecture provides fundamental theoretical and methodological knowledge on children’s reading comprehension and individual differences in children’s reading comprehension. I consider various theoretical frameworks: the Reading for understanding framework, the simple view of reading, the multicomponent model of reding comprehension. In addition, I presented examples of standardized test of text comprehension and tasks for assessing its components among children. |

Palazzo di Lettere - Aula D4-Olimpia [3.06 - 3] | Elena Florit | Digital Reading in Beginner Readers: An advantage or a disadvantage for text comprehension? This lecture reviews meta-analytic studies comparing reading on paper and on screens among secondary school students an undergraduates. I also discuss two relevant and widely discussed hypotheses that have been proposed to explain the screen inferiority effect identified in previous meta-analytic studies. Subsequently, I will present three studies I conducted with various co-authors examining reading comprehension on paper and on screens in substantially younger students (i.e., beginner readers) than those included in previous meta-analytic research. |
