Learning objectives

The course aims to give students an understanding of the main events of Italian and European history in the years between the Great War and the collapse of communism. It is focused on European political, cultural and social history, which is analyzed from a comparative and transnational perspective. At the end of the course the student must be able to: a) identify the periodizations connected to the different historical periods; b) know the most important events of the different periods connected both to the European contest and to the single national cases; c) to be familiar with the most important political cultures, the economic processes and the social transformations that mark the historical phases considered; d) to use in a critical way the different historiographic interpretations.

Prerequisites and basic notions

The student must ensure a good knowledge of the Italian language and a basic knowledge of Contemporary History.

Program

1. The Belle Epoque and the origins of contemporary Europe. 2. Giolitti's Italy and the origins of the First World War.
3. The Apocalypse of modernity: questions and problems related to the First World War.
4. The Russian Revolution.
5. An impossible transition: political violence, the end of democracy and the birth of fascism.
6. The age of totalitarianism.
7. Italian fascism: origins, characteristics and ideology.
8. Fascism and the construction of consensus.
9. The Soviet Union and Stalinist communism.
10. The origins of the Second World War and its developments.
11. The resistance in Italy and Europe.
12. The world after the catastrophe. The difficult path towards rebirth (1945-1950).
13. The golden age and the affirmation of the welfare society. 14. Youth protests, social conflicts and struggles for rights. 15. Republican Italy: from the post-war period to the economic boom.
16. Terrorism in Italy and the crisis of the first republic.
17. Europe, the United States, the USSR in the 80s and 90s. 18. After the end of the perfect bipolarism: a restless world.

Didactic methods

The lessons will be frontal and in presence. However, there will be no lack of thematic insights to be implemented through the analysis, in seminar form, of some particular documentary typologies (specific and significant archive papers, historical films, songs, etc.).

Learning assessment procedures

Assessment method: written test structured in open and closed questions.
Contents: the questions will focus on the topics covered during the course and developed in the volumes indicated in the bibliography.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Objectives: to test the ability to present historical concepts using appropriate terminology, the ability to connect events and to place them adequately within individual national contexts.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Evaluation method: score expressed in thirtieths, resulting from the sum of the points attributed to each of the questions.
