Learning objectives

The course aims to provide a valid conceptual framework for an analytical and critical reflection on the contemporary world in relation to the theoretical evolution of strategic thinking. Concrete examples drawn from the history of the Middle and Far East, the Indian subcontinent, the different practices of struggle and resistance of minorities will be highlighted.

History and philosophy of geopolitics (12 hours) The birth of German geopolitik and its crisis – readings from Ratzel, Haushofer, Schmitt (2 hours) The philosophical foundations of American geopolitics – readings from Kennan, Kissinger, Deneen (4 hours) The Chinese geopolitical tradition – readings from Sun Tzu, Wang Huning, Qiao Liang (4 hours) Geopolitics as geoeconomics? Strategic thinking in the unipolar moment (2 hours) 2. Theory and practice of contemporary geopolitics (12 hours) From spatial determinism to the analysis of forms of life (4 hours) The concept of “geopolitical representation” – case study on the USA and Russia (4 hours) The strategic use of cartography – the Chinese and post-colonial case (4 hours) 3. Critique of geopolitical reason (12 hours) Is geopolitics a science? The exam aims to verify the achievement of the learning objectives. Assessment is based on: a) Knowledge of the topics covered b) Ability to personally elaborate and use specialized language, both in written and oral presentations c) Active participation The program is the same for both attending and non-attending students.
