Learning objectives

The teaching module aims to give the theoretical and practical tools that are necessary to evaluate the spread of diseases in the human populations and their associated risk factors. The goal is to provide students with competencies in epidemiology and biostatistics.
The purpose of this teaching module is to provide the student with knowledge/understanding of:
- Evolution of epidemiology, main fields of epidemiology, measures of frequency, association and risk.
- Definition of risk factor, protective factor, prognostic factor, causes, determinants of health.
- Designs of epidemiological studies, main methods of epidemiological investigation and planning of surveillance systems.
- Descriptive statistics: calculation and interpretation.
- Description and interpretation of measures of frequency.
- Application of calculation to descriptive indexes and position measurements.
- Fundamental methods of investigation and surveillance of disease outbreaks and pandemics.

Learning assessment procedures

To pass the exam, the student are required to demonstrate/be able to:
- Understanding of the basic applied bio-statistic methods and the elements of an epidemiological investigation.
- Interpret the main descriptive measures in the epidemiological field.
- From an epidemiologic study, recognize the characteristics of the study design and interpret the results described in the tables.
