Learning objectives
The course aims at providing in-depth knowledge on the history of the language and literary civilisation of the Slavic peoples in order to facilitate the learning of various Slavic languages and literatures. By the end of the course, students will: 1) know the salient aspects of linguistic and cultural developments from Old Church Slavonic into modern languages and the history of Slavic Studies; 2) know how to apply specific knowledge from the philological and linguistic fields; 3) develop independent judgments on the main topics of the course and express them in a coherent and correct way.
Prerequisites and basic notions
Good command of the English language.
The knowledge of Russian is recommended; if Russian is not a language you know, please contact the professors in advance to get alternative readings and materials.
Program
The course unfolds in the following sections:
1. historical introduction
2. genealogical classification of the Slavic languages
3. diachronic approach to phonological changes
4. language policies in the Slavic countries
5. theoretical debates on the Russian literary language between the 18th and 19th centuries
6. practical outcomes of philology: two examples from late 18th century and the age of Pushkin

Non-attending students are invited to contact the teachers to make arrangements on the programme.
In the case of missed lessons, students will be able to use the materials uploaded on the moodle page, and to ask the teacher for an update during the office hours.
Students who do not know or study Russian are invited to contact the teachers.

Evaluation criteria
- substantial correctness and completeness of the answers in terms of contents
- adequate analysis and presentation abilities
- clarity of the presentation, argumentative ability
- mastery of the subject-specific vocabulary.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final mark is expressed in in /30.
It will consist of 5 points per question, each question being related to each one of the 6 modules of the course.
