Learning objectives

In the context of the theoretic and critical investigation of French literary studies provided in the two-year master’s degree program, this course aims at developing both historical and methodological competences. As for the students attending the course in French literature for publishing and journalism, this course offers insights on the history of French publishing and on the relationship between literature or literary criticism and jouralism. At the end of this course, students shall acquire knowledge in the field of the recent history of French literary criticism and related methods (LM37) and the history of publishing in France (LM19), along with the capacity of applying such knowledge to literary research as well as to teaching French.

Program

Part 1 (prof. R.Benedettini)
After a theoretical-methodological introduction, the first part of this LM course will be dedicated to the new interpretation of myths in André Gide, a vision that significantly marks a large number of his works. Given this introductory framework, we will focus in particular on the reinterpretation of the myth of Theseus. Students will also have the opportunity to reflect on the critical edition of the texts. The texts will be uploaded to Moodle.

Part 2 (Perazzolo): The second part of the course aims to explore the origins of one of the literary myths that has enjoyed greater success in French literary production (and beyond). After a theoretical and methodological introduction to the concept of literary myth, the course will consider Molière's reuse (and re-elaboration) of previous material in the composition of Don Juan (1655), as well as some transformations of the figure of the libertine throughout the 18th century, when we can trace an evolution (involution?) of a story that has since undergone numerous metamorphoses, extending into the contemporary era. As J. Rousset points out, Don Juan became a myth because he is « un bien commun que tout le monde s’approprie sans jamais l’épuiser ».
The detailed program, selection of texts, and complete bibliographical information will be provided at the beginning of the course. Students who cannot attend the course are requested to contact Paola Perazzolo (paola.perazzolo@univr.it).
