Program
First session. Introduction to the topic. Key concepts (4 hours):
- Short review of key concepts: health, disease, health determinants, surveillance and monitoring, prevention and health promotion
- The importance of social inequalities in health
- The intersection of health and environment and the concept of One Health
Second session. Proximal determinants: lifestyles (6 hours):
- Smoking, epidemiology and public health actions
- Alcohol, epidemiology and public health actions
- Physical activity, epidemiology and public health actions
- Nutrition, epidemiology and public health actions
Third session. Distal determinants: general socio-economic, environmental and cultural conditions (4 hours):
- Education, income, work, gender
- Quality of the environment
- Commercial determinants of health
- Armed conflicts
Practical exercise (6 hours):
Students will be provided with data (in the form of analysis output tables) from one of the surveillance systems. Students will be asked to transform the data into information and accordingly to prepare a report and powerpoint presentations. The class will be divided into at least two groups. The presentations prepared by the class will then be presented to an audience of public health professionals.
Topics covered by the exercise:
- From data to information: writing a summary of the main results (text) and oral presentation (powerpoint) (4 hours)
- Organisation and running of a presentation event (2 hours)
