Learning objectives

The Teaching provides the tools for understanding and medical approach to the main neoplastic diseases in the cancer patient, illustrates the basic elements and quality controls of Radiotherapy equipment as well as the techniques of radiotherapy treatment.

EQUIPMENT AND QUALITY CONTROLS IN RADIOTHERAPY: to provide the basic elements on equipment and its use in Radiotherapy with reference to quality controls and the role and professional development of the Medical Radiology Technician

INTEGRATED THERAPEUTIC PROTOCOLS IN ONCOLOGY: to provide the tools for understanding and medical approach to major neoplastic diseases in the oncology patient.

PRINCIPLES AND INDICATIONS TO RADIOTHERAPY: to provide the knowledge regarding the clinical indications for radiotherapy treatment, the therapeutic approach and the radiobiological principles on which treatment in Radiotherapy is based

PRINCIPLES AND INDICATIONS TO ADROTERAPY: to provide the knowledge regarding the clinical indications for treatment in Hadrontherapy with special emphasis on Protontherapy, the physical/radiobiological principles
And the main treatment protocols for adult and pediatric patients.

RADIOTHERAPY AND ADROTHERAPY TECHNIQUES: the student, at the end of the course, should be able to: - describe the main concepts of radiobiology, the characteristics of the different ionizing radiations used for cancer therapy (X-rays, gamma rays, hadrons) and their interactions with living tissues - describe the concepts of RBE (Relative Biological Efficacy), LET (Linear Energy Transfer), Build Up, therapeutic ratio (TCP/NTCP) and therapeutic window in radiotherapy - describe the process of radiotherapy setup and centering, from aids to CT - describe the operation of a linear accelerator for radiotherapy (LINAC) and its components - describe the beam delivery techniques of a LINAC with MLC (multi leaf collimator), including static and arc beam techniques - describe the operation and beam delivery method of a Tomotherapy equipment - describe the operation of a TPS (Treatment Planning System) and the advanced planning techniques possible to date - Set-up and IGRT (Image Guided Radiotherapy) at the treatment site - describe in general the main special techniques (Stereotaxy, TBI, IORT, Adro/Protontherapy, Brachytherapy. ..) of Radiotherapy and the latest technological innovations in radiotherapy.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge of radiation physics, general principles of radiotherapy, the essential functioning of external radiotherapy equipment, and introductory knowledge of quality control and safety in the use of ionizing radiation are required.

Case discussions consistent with the objective of understanding the radiological context and systems/equipment in use
group work with formative assessment during assessment with OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) station examinations with stations consistent with the teaching objectives or integrated with other professional learning areas

Evaluation criteria

The assessment elements that contribute to the awarding of the grade are:
knowledge and the ability to understand,
the ability to apply knowledge,
autonomy of judgment, that is, the ability to make critical sense and formulate judgments,
the ability to communicate.

In evaluating the individual tests and awarding the grade, the teaching teachers refer to the following scale for assessing learning.
Lower than 18 : Fragmentary and superficial knowledge of content, errors in applying concepts, poor exposition
18 - 20 : Sufficient but general content knowledge, simple exposition, uncertainties in applying theoretical concepts
21 - 23 : Appropriate but not thorough content knowledge, ability to apply theoretical concepts, ability to present content in a simple way
24 - 25 : Appropriate and extensive content knowledge, fair ability to apply knowledge, ability to present content in an articulate manner.
26 - 27 : Content knowledge accurate and complete, good ability to apply knowledge, ability to analyze, clear and correct exposition
28 - 29 : Broad, complete and thorough knowledge of content, good application of content, good ability to analyze and synthesize, confident and correct exposition,

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Written test: 30 multiple-choice questions (correct answer 0.85 points) + 3 open-ended questions (1.5 points for each complete and exhaustive question)
