Learning objectives

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge in biochemistry, applied biology and radiobiology, radiation protection and dosimetry, necessary to understand the molecular and cellular processes triggered by ionizing and non-ionizing radiations in their impact with the matter. Furthermore, the course provides notions on X-rays and the principles of image formation in diagnostic imaging and radiation protection concepts that can be applied to the operator, patient and areas of medical relevance.

BIOCHEMISTRY: the course is mostly focused on the relationship between structure and function of biological macromolecules and the main metabolic pathways in which they are involved. The fundamental objective is to stimulate the student's interest in biomolecular science by highlighting interconnections between biochemical processes and related energetics. At the end of the Course the student should prove to master scientific terms and notions in order to critically and autonomously evaluate the biochemical processes of life.

APPLIED BIOLOGY AND RADIOBIOLOGY: to provide knowledge about the molecular and cellular processes common to all living organisms. To provide basic knowledge of human genetics in order to recognize the methods of transmission of hereditary characteristics, normal and pathological. To understand the molecular and cellular processes triggered by ionizing and non-ionizing radiations.

PRINCIPLES OF RADIATION DOSIMETRY: the aim of the dosimetry module is to familiarize with Physical concepts underlying interaction Of the Radiation with matter. The program is built facing the Presentation of Physical magnitudes connected to the use of ionizing radiation in Medical Practices. Some practical and numerical examples are presented too. It is Presented the Radiation Protection Basic Concepts in the medical relevance areas.

PRINCIPLES OF RADIATION PROTECTION: to give information on X rays and radiation protection.

Evaluation criteria

The assessment elements that contribute to the awarding of the grade are:
knowledge and the ability to understand,
the ability to apply knowledge,
autonomy of judgment, that is, the ability to make critical sense and formulate judgments,
the ability to communicate.

In evaluating the individual tests and awarding the grade, the teaching teachers refer to the following scale for assessing learning.
Lower than 18 : Fragmentary and superficial knowledge of content, errors in applying concepts, poor exposition
18 - 20 : Sufficient but general content knowledge, simple exposition, uncertainties in applying theoretical concepts
21 - 23 : Appropriate but not thorough content knowledge, ability to apply theoretical concepts, ability to present content in a simple way
24 - 25 : Appropriate and extensive content knowledge, fair ability to apply knowledge, ability to present content in an articulate manner.
26 - 27 : Content knowledge accurate and complete, good ability to apply knowledge, ability to analyze, clear and correct exposition
28 - 29 : Broad, complete and thorough knowledge of content, good application of content, good ability to analyze and synthesize, confident and correct exposition,

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The learning of the course will be assessed by administering a written exam with multiple choice quizzes. In detail: 21 questions for the 2 CFU modules, 11 questions for the 1 CFU module; the additional question will be for the possible awarding of honors. Each correct answer will be evaluated as +1, no penalty in case of a wrong answer.
