Learning objectives

Acquisition of the basic legal knowledge and forensic background necessary for the practice of the profession of biotechnologist in the modern social context. Acquisition of basic knowledge of the modern technological approach in the forensic biomedical investigation.

Prerequisites and basic notions

There are no specific prerequisites other than those required for admission to the degree course.

Program

FORENSIC MEDICINE - Introduction to forensic medicine - General framework of health legislation pertaining to intellectual professions, health professions, professional secrecy, informed consent, information to the Judicial Authority, crimes.
FORENSIC TOXICOLOGY - introduction to forensic toxicology - biological matrices usable in forensic toxicology: analytical and interpretative aspects - different methods of preparation of the biological sample in the pre-analytical phase - chromatographic separation analytical techniques in liquid and gaseous phase: general and applicative aspects. Electrophoretic techniques - analytical detection techniques: UV, UV-Vis, fluorimetry, mass spectrometry - validation of analytical methods Main substances of abuse of forensic interest: pharmaco-toxicological characteristics and analytical problems. Doping. FORENSIC GENETICS Introduction to Forensic Genetics - Collection, Conservation and Characterization of the biological sample - The biological sample, DNA extraction and quantification.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will consist of a written test with multiple choice questions and 2 open questions (duration: 60 minutes).

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Mastery and level of depth of the topics covered in class; command of language; ability to frame the proposed topics and to articulate and deepen the answers

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

For each multiple choice question the following scores will be assigned: zero points for each incorrect or unanswered answer, 1 point for each correct answer. Each of the two open questions will be assigned a score from 0 to 3.
