Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students with the tools to understand and interpret the molecular mechanisms of disease from a biochemical perspective, with particular emphasis on the role of proteins and enzymes as key determinants of pathogenesis, as therapeutic targets, and as potential therapeutic agents. Attention is given to major classes of disorders, including defects in carbohydrate, amino acid, lipid, and nucleic acid metabolism, as well as membrane transport disorders and mitochondrial and lysosomal diseases. These topics highlight the contribution of alterations in proteins and enzymes to the development of pathological conditions and illustrate examples of biotechnological and pharmacological strategies involving proteins and enzymes as both therapeutic targets and therapeutic agents.

Prerequisites and basic notions

The student should be familiar with the fundamental concepts of biochemistry addressed during an undergraduate biochemistry course

Introduction to metabolism. Metabolic homeostasis and its dysregulation in disease. Lysosomal storage diseases. Disorders of amino acid metabolism. Disorders of nucleotide metabolism. Disorders of carbohydrate metabolism. Membrane transport disorders. Proteins in disease and therapy. Proteins as therapeutic targets. Principles of protein engineering. Design and optimization of protein-based therapeutics.

Learning assessment procedures

The topics covered will be evaluated in a single exam. The exam consists of a written test (multiple-choice questions, short open questions, and exercise questions) lasting approximately one hour, which aims to assess the level of knowledge of the topics covered during the course.

Evaluation criteria

To pass the exam, the student must demonstrate that they have fully achieved the set learning objectives.
The completeness and accuracy of the acquired knowledge, as well as the ability to present and demonstrate critical thinking, will be evaluated. The examination format is the same for both attending and non-attending students

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The evaluation of the exam is expressed out of thirty, the minimum mark for passing the exam is 18/30 and the maximum mark is 30/30, to which "honors" can be added (30 cum laude)
