Learning objectives

The course aims at furnishing the theoretical and technological basis to approach the study of protein functions. The course integrates proteomic strategies, target identification, biochemical interaction analysis, protein arrays, informatics-based interaction prediction to address the investigation of the proteinogenic changes that underlie the disease pathomechanisms, with examples based on selected diseases.

Prerequisites and basic notions

Basic knowledge on analytical biochemistry, methods of protein separation, biochemistry.

Program

The program covers the study of methods that allow investigation of the function of proteins in a complex biological system, and thus understanding their role in disease mechanisms or drug action. Topics include: physicochemical properties of proteins; bi- and multidimensional protein separation methods; study of molecular interactions using mass spectrometry; proximity labeling; isotopic labeling; photo/crosslinking; temperature gradient methods; bioinformatics platforms for mapping molecular interactions; and network enrichment methods.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam is a 2-hour written exam, the test is composed of two open questions each relating one of the topics covered in the program.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

The evaluation considers the capacity for analysis and in-depth analysis of the topic under examination. The property of language and use of specific terminology is considered.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

The final grade is given by the sum of the scores reported in the two questions proposed in the test.
