Learning objectives

Recent approaches and applications of biotechnology in the microbiological/medical field. To understand how the scientific research proceeds in the field of microbial biotechnology, to identify the problems and the strategies to reach adequate solutions

Prerequisites and basic notions

Knowledge of basic biology Structure of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells.
Structure of bacteria and viruses

Program

Microbiological diagnosis using both traditional methods and molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, real-time PCR, digital PCR). Microbial identification from biochemistry, genomics, and proteomics. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing: from standard classical methods to new fast approaches. Clonality analysis: from serological methods to genomic approaches, up to new approaches. Rapid microbiological diagnostics for the diagnosis of sepsis. Phages: phage therapy. Phage products (endolysins and others). Phage display and its applications. Antimicrobial peptides and bacteriocins. Probiotics. Biosensors and toxin-antitoxin systems. Bacteria and stress: bacterial biofilms and clinical implications. Mechanisms of bacterial pathogenicity and virulence: endotoxins and exotoxins. Microbiota, Microbiome, and Metagenomics. Viruses and species jumps. Vaccines.

Learning assessment procedures

Written exam with 3 open-ended discursive questions: one for the 16-hour module and two for the 32-hour module

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Each question is scored from 0 to 10 based on the level of depth and completeness of the answer.

Criteria for the composition of the final grade

Each module must obtain a positive evaluation. The final grade will be the average obtained in the three questions out of thirty.
