Learning objectives
At the end of the course the student will be able to understand the biological, environmental, cultural, processing etc that underlie the emergence of new infections and their spread. The molecular aspects of microorganisms that emerge as new agents of infection are also analysed. It is also considered the re-emerging microorganisms that appeared to be public health problems resolved.

Basics of general microbiology
Program
Introduction to the general concepts leading to the emergence of new microorganisms as infectious agents. Multidrug resistance as a major emerging public health problem. Mechanism of action of antibiotics. Mechanisms of antibiotic resistance. Major multidrug-resistant microorganisms. ESKAPE microorganisms. Rapid resistance detection methods. General characteristics, virulence factors, molecular mechanisms, and clinical manifestations of emerging bacteria and their infections: Enterobacteriaceae and Escherichia coli O157-H7; Cholera and Vibrio cholerae O139 and others; Helicobacter pylori; Campylobacter; Clostridium difficile; Listeria monocytogenes; Legionella; Burkholderia pseudomallei, Borrelia and Lyme disease, Mycobacteria and tuberculosis: General characteristics, virulence factors, molecular mechanisms, clinical manifestations of viruses and their emerging infections: Influenza viruses and avian influenza, Ebola virus and hemorrhagic fever viruses, encephalitis viruses: Zika, chikungunya, West Nile virus, etc., Hepatitis B and C viruses, Retroviruses and HIV, Coronaviruses: SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV. Monkeypox: General characteristics, virulence factors, molecular mechanisms, clinical manifestations of parasites and their emerging infections: Malaria and Plasmodium Knowlesi, Prions and prion diseases. Microorganisms considered potential bioterrorist agents.

Learning assessment procedures
The exam will be a written exam. Students are required to answer three open-ended questions related to the topics covered in class. The questions are general in nature and therefore either address a single topic or require consideration of an aspect that spans multiple topics.
Evaluation criteria
The student's ability to answer questions comprehensively and coherently will be assessed. The completeness of the response takes into account all the salient aspects of the topic: characteristics of the microorganism, its pathogenesis and the molecular mechanisms underlying its pathogenicity, the reason it is considered emerging, and the factors that play a decisive role, etc.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The final score is expressed in thirtieths. Each of the three questions is evaluated in tenths for correctness and completeness of the information. The sum of the scores obtained for the individual questions constitutes the final score.
