Learning objectives
The course has a dual purpose: first of all, to make students acquire a rigorous scientific language based on deductive logical-mathematical reasoning; in addition, the course aims to provide students with some analytical tools and basic mathematical models to deal quantitatively with the treatment of economic and business problems. In particular, the foundations of differential and integral calculus, optimization and linear algebra will be provided, which constitute effective tools for analyzing economic and business phenomena. At the end of the lessons the student will have to demonstrate that she has developed the aptitude to face mathematical problems with reasoning and the ability to use, in the application contexts, the appropriate methods, tools and mathematical models. The traditional lectures, dedicated to the more general and theoretical aspects of the discipline, but not without applicative references, are accompanied by hours of exercises, aimed exclusively at solving computational problems and applying them. The students also find in the E-learning pages of the course, as the lessons progress, learning verification tests on the various topics covered.
Prerequisites and basic notions
These are the mathematical concepts that students should have acquired in secondary school: algebraic expressions and rules for their transformations, polynomials, powers and logarithms and their properties, simple integer equations and inequalities, fractional equations and inequalities, some elements of analytical geometry, particularly Cartesian coordinates in the plane, lines and their representation with first-degree equations. All these topics are reviewed at the beginning of the course, for a quick review and further exploration.
Program
- Review of basic concepts (algebraic expressions, powers and logarithms, equations and inequalities, analytic geometry)
- Functions of one variable
- Limits
- Differential calculus
- Integral calculus
- Vector spaces, linear transformations, and matrices
- Systems of linear equations
- Functions of several variables Differential calculus in several variables. Study of maxima and minima.
The detailed syllabus and all teaching materials will be available on the course webpage and by accessing the relevant e-learning pages.

Didactic methods
The course includes 6 credits (equal to 48 hours) of lectures and 3 credits (equal to 36 hours) of exercises. Traditional lectures, which cover the more general and theoretical aspects of the subject but also include practical references, are complemented by hours of exercises, aimed exclusively at solving exercises to better understand the general aspects. Students will also find tests on the course's e-learning pages, as classes progress, to verify their learning on the various topics covered.
During the semester in which classes are held and around exam sessions, tutoring is available, provided by students enrolled in the Master's Degree program, selected through a public selection process. This service is initially aimed primarily at students who, due to mathematical shortcomings in their previous studies, are struggling with the subject from the very first days of classes. The tutoring service continues around the winter and summer exam sessions, now aimed at providing support in preparing for the exam essay. Classes are held in person and recorded on the Panopto platform. There will be no live streaming of the lessons.
Learning assessment procedures
The exam includes a written test with both multiple choice and open questions.
The use of the calculator is not permitted.
Students who have obtained a grade lower than 18 do not pass the exam.
In the middle of the course there is an intermediate written assessment test on the topics already covered in the course with the intention of inducing the student to systematically study the topics of the program from the very first lessons and allowing to divide the exam program into two parts , subjected to a separate assessment of learning (intermediate test and final supplementary test).
- The intermediate test is optional; the student's participation in the test does not affect his/her right to refuse the grade reported, so as to take the entire exam at the end of the semester.
- This intermediate test has the same characteristics as the general exams and covers the program up to the time of the test. The subjects of the intermediate exam are excluded from the supplementary written exam at the end of the semester.
- Sessions useful for completing the exam: the outcome of the intermediate test has value on the final passing of the exam exclusively in the exam session immediately following the end of the course.
- The grade achieved weighs half of the final grade, which is obtained by passing a similar second written test (final supplementary test). In order to pass the written part of the exam, both partial exams must be passed (that is, they must have obtained a vote of at least 8/15) and their sum has to be at least 18.
Evaluation criteria
The written tests consists of 30 questions. You get 1.05 point for each correct answer, 0 points for each answer left blank and a penalisation of -0.42 (equal to the 40%) for each incorrect answer.
The partial tests will consist of 15 questions each. The partial test is considered passed with a vote of at least 8/15. The sum of the marks obtained in the partial tests determines the mark of the written test. Students who have obtained a grade lower than 18 in the written test fail the exam.
Criteria for the composition of the final grade
The written exam consists of 30 questions. The partial exams will consist of 15 questions each. A score of at least 8/15 is considered a pass for the partial exam. The sum of the partial exam scores determines the written exam grade. Students who receive a score lower than 18 on the written exam will fail the exam.
