Learning objectives

The course intends to provide the fundamental elements required for an understanding of the international economic relationships which developed in the Modern and Contemporary Age. After an outline of the historical conditions and the motives underlying the expansion of Europe, the course investigates forms of organisation of production, trade and circulation of the characteristic goods from the different areas (Europe, America ...) in the 15th-20th centuries with particular emphasis on the problem of the structure of interregional and intercontinental trade routes. Consistent with the vision that inspires the CdLM, upon completion of the course the students will know the historical antecedents of the current model of market economy and will be able to compare and give historical depth to the analysis of modern economic systems.

Prerequisites and basic notions

No prior knowledge is required. A high school history textbook is recommended.

Didactic methods

ectures and possible in-depth seminars. The teaching materials used in lessons will be available on the teaching web page. Lessons are held in person, with registration on the Panopto platform. The recording will be made available within a few days.

Learning assessment procedures

For both attending and non-attending students, the exam consists of a written test designed to assess the candidate's overall maturity through questions on the syllabus and the recommended texts.
Various questions will be asked on various topics covered in the syllabus to assess the student's expository and critical thinking skills.

Students with disabilities or specific learning disorders (SLD), who intend to request the adaptation of the exam, must follow the instructions given HERE

Evaluation criteria

Particular attention will be paid to:
- the depth and breadth of the notions learned;
- the ability to appropriately connect the various pieces of knowledge acquired;
- the ability to critically relate past events to contemporary events.
