Learning objectives

The course is part of the ‘Market Internationalisation’ learning area. The course aims to provide students with a basic legal understanding of intellectual property rights. In particular, it will analyze in depth the conditions for the recognition of the various rights, including registration and opposition procedures, as well as the scope of the relevant protection, distinguishing between the national, European and international dimensions. Attention will also be given to the systematic role of intellectual property for innovation, from the perspective of both businesses, as an incentive for
investment and as a strategic asset (particularly in the most technologically
advanced sectors), and consumers, due to the impact generated on competitive dynamics in relation to market communication (in particular regarding the promotion of qualitative values, including ‘sustainability’ itself). Students will acquire the ability to address and resolve real-world problems within the professional context in which they will operate, applying their expertise to the contractual and managerial compliance of intellectual property rights, as well as to the prevention of legal disputes. Students will be able to assess the practical and applied implications of the theoretical and regulatory framework, as well as to address – in written and oral form, including through team work, written exercises and the Problem-Based Learning (PBS) – concrete issues, using appropriate and specific disciplinary terminology, adopting correct lines of reasoning and argumentation, and formulating independent judgements. The teaching method employed is designed to facilitate continuous learning and the updating of acquired knowledge.
