Program
The module aims to provide students with an understanding of the broad relationships between agricultural activity and agricultural law, on the one hand, and global sustainability and environmental law, on the other, taking into account the concept of the agri-food supply chain, food security, and the European "Farm to Fork" and biodiversity strategies. The current international framework will be explored in depth: the European Green Deal; the 2030 Agenda, international negotiations, and debates on climate change.
The online lessons (6 hours) are dedicated to the following topics:
• Models of agriculture and sustainability
• Agrarian law: definitions, subject matter and sources
• European regulations on the use of plant protection products.
The in-person lessons (30 hours) are dedicated to the following topics:
• Sources of agricultural law, food security and legal definition of the agricultural enterprise
• Characteristics of agricultural activity with impact on the agricultural law sector
• Sources of environmental law, sustainability, climate change and biodiversity protection
• Characteristics of traditional agriculture
• Organic production
• Integrated production
• Sustainable production
• Designations of origin and geographical indications
• GMOs
• Precision agriculture
• Phytogenetic innovation and its possible patentability
• Due diligence of agri-food businesses for the purposes of sustainability and protection of the world's forests

Didactic methods
The course will be held in Italian.
The course consists of 30 hours of lectures (supported by the use of PowerPoint presentations). An additional 6 hours will be recorded and available in advance.
From the first lesson, a dynamic teaching model will be encouraged, requiring active student participation. Group exercises will be organized according to the Problem-Based Solving (PBS) method that will serve as the basis for the final work. At the end of the course, the in-depth papers will be presented and a final discussion will take place.
Various discussions will be held in the classroom and via the Moodle platform to encourage participation and understanding of the topics covered. View the bibliography with Leganto, a tool provided by the Library System for retrieving the texts in the exam syllabus in a simple and innovative way.
Learning assessment procedures
Attending students will take two exams:
1) an oral exam on the topics covered in the course (2/3 of the grade);
2) a short group essay (maximum 3,000 words) and its oral presentation (1/3 of the grade).
Attending students must pass both exams with a minimum grade of 18 points for each. Additional points may be awarded to the grade obtained from both exams based on qualitatively active participation:
- in forums and lectures (maximum 1 point x forum)
- in the PBS (maximum 2 points).
Students who do not attend lectures will be assessed through a single oral exam.
Non-attending students are encouraged to consult the Moodle platform, contact the instructor with any questions, and check for any regulatory changes.
Evaluation criteria
The evaluation will be based on the following criteria:
- the depth and breadth of knowledge acquired;
- critical and reasoned study;
- ability to organize knowledge discursively based on the characteristics and legal principles of the subject;
- the ownership of language (legal and specialized) and quality of the presentation;
- the analytical and argumentative ability.
In the case of essays and PBS, the creativity and quality of the presentations.
The final evaluation is expressed in 30ths.
