Learning objectives
Provide students with a background in history, art history, and literature with the fundamentals of research, reading, and transcribing archival documentation relevant to their research; search for a manuscript in paper and digital catalogs; formulate basic descriptions of a manuscript; and navigate the reading and transcription of key documentary and book documents from the 9th to 15th centuries.

Program
The first module, lasting four lessons, includes the illustration, reading, transcription, and cataloguing of various types of documents (sales, donations, exchanges, wills) from the 12th century, with an overview of the methods used to draft deeds. The second module, lasting two lessons, includes the illustration, reading, transcription, and cataloguing of various types of documents from the 13th to the 14th century. The third module, lasting four lessons, includes an overview of the history of archives in the Verona area and their research tools, as well as a bibliography of studies and editions of documents. It also covers how to search for codices in paper and digital catalogues, as well as the main codicological and textual aspects of manuscripts for the given time period, in order to formulate a description useful for cataloguing purposes. The final exam, lasting two lessons, consists of the transcription, cataloguing, and annotation of a document, freely chosen by the student based on their interests. The papers will be presented and discussed in class during these two seminar-style meetings and will be approved by the supervisor.
Didactic methods
The course consists of a workshop, lasting a total of 36 hours, with a final written exam. Course duration: Each module consists of 12 sessions of 3 academic hours each, with the last two dedicated to the final exam, conducted in seminar format. For a total of 36 hours of attendance per module, plus 40 hours of independent work to prepare the final report. Students may attend one or both modules, depending on their individual learning needs. Class schedule and location: Module 1 meetings will take place between October 2025 and January 2026; all meetings will be held on Thursday afternoons, from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, primarily at the State Archives of Verona.
Learning assessment procedures
The final exam, lasting two lessons, consists of transcribing, compiling a summary, and providing commentary on a document, freely chosen by the student based on their interests. The papers will be presented and discussed in class during these two seminar-style sessions and will be approved by the supervisor.
